Spoiler Alert
2 Achievements
Taking Sides 10
Join the Stormcloaks or the Imperial Army
War Hero 10
Capture Fort Sungard or Fort Greenwall
Hero of Skyrim 30
Capture Solitude or Windhelm
(there are more but these are the ones i want to talk about)

Well good news, and bad news, the good news is looks like there will be at least 2 epic battles deciding the fate of the empire/rebels the bad news is they are probably right after each other.....

It doesn't seem very good news to me as it seems there will be a lack of skrimishes and ransacking towns and small scale battles that i was hoping for (but not really expecting)
but anyway lets talk about the combat aspect of these
1. how many troops do you expect?
2.what sort of combat? ex they all run at you in each individual area like oblivion gaurds or you gradually fight up the streets to the keep etc.
3. do you expect to be general of the battle or a mere soldeir or both!!!
4. do you expect each side to have a champion ( who ever gets dovahkiin gets other champion that easily slaughters gaurds making him/her a target for dovahkiin
5. do you expect citizens to run and flee or help out?
6. if (when) you win what do you thinks the actions will be for the survivors(if there are any)
do you think you can choose like release them but scatter them across tamriel etc)

LESSA STARTA THE TALKIN a

1. I expect there to be more people in the battles thanks to better rendering.

2. I kind of expect an every man for themselves situation where your team just scatters through the city.

3. I think by the time you ransack Solitude or Windhelm, you'll be an important figure on the side of your choice.

4. The other side will probably have a leader. I don't expect the Legion or Storm Cloaks to recognize you as Dovakiin. This seems like a separate quest line from the main quest.

5. It depends if the city is expecting a raid. There could be innocent casualties no matter who you pick.

6. I'm thinking everyone will conform to the new leader or something.

I am really excited about the possibilities here.

See, I'm a huge roleplayer. My first character, my Nord, is going to join the Stormcloaks.

After the war, I really hope Ulfric Stormcloak becomes High King, ya know, makes good on his claim to the throne. 'Cause I'm going to RP as the head knight of the High King. And, I'm hoping that we get our own fort/manor.

I know we'll start out as a mere soldier, but I'm pretty sure we'll rise to a general-sort of rank.

So the main quest will revolve around the empires and rebels and we'll progress like the NCR and Caesar's Legion in New Vegas?

Good news and bad. It'll be cool to take part in battles, but what if one of my character doesn't want to take a side? Avoid the MQ I guess?

Eh I think you might be jumping a bit there, its only 2 of the achieves and even then not every fight is likely to be an achievement.

Im hoping the cities get changed depending on what side wins >.>

Just thought I'd share my NEW backstory in light of some of the new info we've received lately and also as part of this topic.

Career: son of a farmer, and becomes a soldier in the Stormcloak Rebellion, later becoming Ulfric
Stormcloak's right hand man, second in command - sometimes carrying out assassinations for
Ulfric Stormcloak, and later becomes the highest knight of the king's court after the rebels
win the war.

Backstory: Rigmor was raised by Nord parents on a farm in southern Skyrim near Oakwood. His father
was a hardworking farmer who taught his son the values of hardwork. Rigmor helped his father daily, having his chores along with his sister, who is 1 year older than him.
His parents were illiterate, but that did not stop the young Rigmor from learning to read, and by age six, he was an avid reader, and seemed to have the memory of a detailed painting, able to remember the most lucid details. He was also stronger than most boys his age, likely all boys, and could knock an orc lad cold with his bare hands.
By age 12, the boy was able to purchase his first mortar & pestle, long having an interest in alchemy. He had read quite a few books on the 'science' and by now was performing quite a few experiments using the flora and fauna of the region where he was growing up.
By age 16, civil war was brewing in the region, as young Rigmor would hear rumors of an Ulfric Stormcloak, who had claims to the high kingship of Skyrim. According to gossip, this Ulfric wanted to oust the Imperials, that Skyrim was mighty and well deserving of the right of self-governance. He now wanted to join the rebellion.
When he was 17, he told his father he wanted to join the Stormcloaks, but his father wouldn't allow it, and they got into an argument. Before the fight ended, Rigmor tells his father that he hates his life on the farm, and wishes it would have been him to die instead of his mother.
That's when a group of Imperial soldiers arrived. They tried to pin the crime of tax evasion on Sten, and threatened to take his farm. That's when his sister showed up. The Captain then took her and proceeds to [censored] her, and Rigmor tried to stop him. Several soldiers held Rigmor down, having him arrested for trying to assault an Imperial Legion Officer, and for murder. Rigmor had put up a good fight, and had even slain one soldier with his fists.
They were going to have the boy executed, when he was rescued. Now, he heads back to the farm, where he finds his father murdered and his sister gone. He found his father, laying in a field of corn. His sister though, was nowhere to be found. In the house, he found a black hand on the wall. To Rigmor, this was the work of the infamous Dark Brotherhood (Or was it?). The Argonian Shadowscale he later meets will tell him it is a strange matter, as assassins in the Dark Brotherhood never leave their mark on walls, nor do they kidnap people. Now, Rigmor believes the hand is a cover-up by the Imperial Legion Captain, or is it?

Why he's being executed: For murdering an Imperial Legionnaire, and assault on a Captain

The main quest has to do with killing the dragon god Alduin. This whole choosing sides is a separate deal.

Kind of like Daggerfall when the Emperor asks you to do the main quest and then gives you a separate quest which he phrases as something trivial:
Spoiler
Destroying a letter from him to the Queen of Daggerfall.
This small side quest is a pretty big deal if you decide to take the quest. So back to Skyrim, both the main quest and the civil war are major plot points however separate. At least that's my idea of the whole storm cloaks and legion thing.

We really don't know what this is about. It's entirely possible dragon hunting mixes in with the civil war for our hero's main quest. I assumed it did. However, if these are two factions with clashing quest-lines entirely separate from the main quest, that's awesome.

But I see what you meant, as of now all we know of the MQ is that we're taking out dragons.

[EDIT] - Either way, this type of war is one of the main things I've wanted in an ES game since Morrowind. House wars only had a few quests a piece. The Civil War here may be my favorite part of Skyrim.

THIS.
It seems like every faction quest-line has only three achievements: joining - a pivotal moment - ending. I bet when you sack the fort you get promoted into the inner circle of Ulfric or General whatever, aka, the middle one. You'll definitely be taking on guys before and after that. Kinda like Helms deep and Minas Tirith. Both huge battles, but a lot of stuff before either and inbetween.
