Speech skill?

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 5:01 pm

I've been playing for a long time and talking with a lot of merchants and selling a lot of items and I've got training from a few and my speech skill is only 35, and I'm playing as a nord. I don't get it, is there any way to increase the skill faster because I'm sick and tired of selling expensive items for a small amount of gold?

i guess you could find someone who can train you in speechcraft. also you could activate the thief stone to raise thief skills 20% faster

Get the sign of the Thief from the guardian stones near Helgen. That'll make thief skills raise 20% faster. Not a huge boost, but noteworthy.

Without exploiting the game mechanics, not really.

You can sell ridiculous amounts of iron daggers to a merchant, but then your blacksmithy will be too high.

Trading is the only way to realistically get it higher since the game basically doesn't have a healthy amount of speech checks.

Theres an exploit if you want.

Spoiler
In Riften talk to the guy at the counter at Black-Briar Meadery. You can do his speech check repeatedly to increase your skill. Just keep pressing 1 key/button. I think you need 27 to succeed the first time.

But yeah the highest mine has gotten legitly is like 43 and that's with the Thief stone.

Give donations to beggers in each city.

I got my speech up by selling leather bracers.

It seemed quicker and cheaper than selling daggers.

When you have a bunch of items to sell, sell them one at a time.

There are not too many speech checks in the game to buff up the Speech Skill along the way.

Unless you're putting points into the perks, its actually a bad idea to get speech too high.

Merchant run out of gold for me after I sell like 2 things now. My speech is up in the 50s with 1 perk into the first level for 10% better prices.

I spend more time trying to unload all my loot (aka, jumping from city to city) then I do collecting it.

If you're in this situation and not willing to invest more perks in Speech to sufficiently buff the vendors, then you're best off changing your loot-or-leave threshhold[*] until the balance between time spent adventuring and time spent selling stuff is more to your liking.

[*] ie "it has to be worth 20 septims per unit of weight for me to bring it out for vendoring". If you're spending too much time running around for vendors, up that to 30, or 50. You'll carry out less money value per dungeon, but concentrated in the best-quality items so it's the least hassle to unload them.

If you take this approach after getting a high Speech skill, what it essentially means is that Speech is allowing you to get the same amount of gold for less player-effort. If you don't mind that that has contributed to your leveling up without contributing to killing power, that's a win.

The value of what you sell really affects how fast your speech skills go up, I saw someone using a npc selling exploit on pc selling their own daedric armor worth 4k gold repeatedly while the shop keeper was out of money since this still affects your speech skill even if the item is not sold and the skill went from 70-100 in less than two minutes.

You can carry a lot of small stuff too, plates, ingredients, etc. That counts when 'speechifying'.
