Lockpicking tree is useless

Post » Sun Dec 11, 2011 5:28 pm

So my lockpicking skill is like 38 and I started putting points in the lockpicking tree just recently (at level 18 or so) and I can already pick master locks (with a necklace that adds 20% lockpicking ease and gloves that add like 15%) so I've completely wasted pointing points into lockpicking. I have like 70 lockpicks and can pick any lock in the game...What's happening here? When my skill gets to 50 will locks just open automatically? LOL

I agree, I truly don't see the need of this perk tree. I guess some people are just bad at picking locks.

Okay, so I guess Extra Pockets, which lets you carry 100 more units of equipment is useless too? Being able to find more treasure and gold? Is that useless as well?

Ya I just lockpick chests in dungeons and my lockpicking is almost 80 but I always have over 100 lockpicks so even master locks really dont matter

could have been put in another skill tree so statement is pretty void.

honestly you can pick any lock with enough patiants real life skill and 20 lockpicks. 2-3 if you get lucky 10-20 if not. I mean lock picking was just easy.

Isn't Extra Pockets in the pickpocket tree, not the lockpicking tree?

The extra treasure perks aren't really useful in lategame when money becomes largely meaningless, but if you skill lockpicking early it might give a decent little boost midgame. Mostly they're pretty useless tho, yes. Especially if you get the skeleton key.

What?
The lockpicking tree lets you do so much. It doesn't matter where it will fit. It is far from useless. I don't see how it fitting somewhere else effects that.

Well it's the fallout 3 lockpicking system. So yeah it's easy mode this time around.

The 100 carry weight is in pickpocketing, another almost completely useless tree.

I agree with the OP, lockpicking tree is useless. Haven't spent one point in it on my Bosmer thief.

Not that Oblivions lock picking was hard either. You just use the sound and if your reaction time is decent you can do it. Kinda raged when you failed on the last tumbler though on a very hard lock...

I picked a master lock the other day with a skill of exactly 20, and broke only 3 picks... just all about tapping lightly and finding the sweetspot. I got lots of practice with the system from Fallout lol

Take off your enchantments and see how well you do?

Nope no enchantments, no perks, just pure skill. The lockpicking tree is useless along with a few others.

The whole lock picking mini game has made the actual lockpicking skill useless, much less the perk tree.

When I can lockpick a master lock with 15 lock picking skill something is extremely broken.

Lockpicking ridiculously relies on luck. I have tried to open a master lock, 30 lockpicks on hand. And I opened it on first try

I don't even have to reach 30 lockpicking in order to do that. Meanwhile, I spent 11 lockpicks on an expert lock

Spending perk points on that tree is unjustified. Buying a lot of lockpicks is

I almost maxed out the entire tree and I didn't regret any of it.

Me, I went up to the extra loot perk and I haven't regretted it. There are far too few perks in the game that my ranger/rogue will even use to not put it there.

you know what they shouldve done? just combined lockpicking and pickpocketing, and keep one of the supposedly useless skills they cut. god knows i got more enjoyment out of running everywhere to level athletics then i did wasting perks on lockpick...

Same here stupid tree. I wish they would have made a misc. tree instead. Maybe perks for shouts or dialogue with children or perks that were in fallout that raised certain skills at night, you get the picture. Anyway after all the locks I picked in fallout I got pretty darn good at it. I can pick a lock not matter if it's the hardest one in 5 or less attempts. Also a tip is go to the theaves guild hideout and you can practice picking locks as much as you want. There is a sound that lets you know where the lock can be picked. I can't even hear it with my tv speakers, I have to be wearing my headphones. Also the lockpicking tree would be more usefull if the locks reset after every attempt, so that way once you got the right position it wouldn't be a cake walk from there. Kinda like they do in the theaves guild.

It could be fixed by simply not allowing the player to pick a lock of a certain quality until they reach a certain skill level. Why they didn't do that boggles the mind, especially since they apply those restrictions to everything else, like you can't enchant/craft/upgrade the highest level equipment until you get your crafting skills up.

I have a mod on Nexus called the 'Fingersmith Mod' under the name bladerunner1971.
http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1336

It makes the Lockpicking much more difficult by finetuning the sweet spot and adjusting
the Novice, Apprentice, Adept, Expert and Master Perks to be much more viable and less
like stepping stones to the goodies. All GMST changes are laid out for anyone who gives
a #$%@. It's 1.2beta currently. I'll finalize it when the CK is released.

Been a long time since I posted here. Please try to keep the comments constructive...
Please.
