Need Help - Redguard

Post » Fri Dec 16, 2011 12:39 pm

I've been wanting to start a game as a Redguard because, flicking through some lore pages on UESP, I'm fascinated by what I've gleaned about their history and culture. I'm really into roleplaying my characters and love it when I can accurately make in-game decisions based on what my character would do.

Thing is, I actually know very little about Redguards. It means that even though my character should really have a gut instinct about who to side with, for example, in the Alik'r Warriors quest, in reality I just don't have a clue :S. I know Redguards featured more prominently in earlier TES games like Arena and Dagerfall, and correct me in thinking there's a TES Adventures game called Redguard too, so if anyone has played these games or knows a bit more about Redguards, can you please tell me more about them? Anything you can tell me about the race in general, current states of things, whatever... I'd be grateful :)

Also, if you don't mind, please don't give spoilers for Skyrim away (e.g. as a redguard you would choose this in this quest, kill her, etc) - I'd like to make those decisions based on what I can learn about the race. Skyrim is my first TES game and I've not played it much so I wouldn't want the experience to be ruined. Thanks.

Basically.....

They came from a (literally) sinking continent where it was almost impossible to grow crops to Tamriel, they kicked ass in Hammerfell like nobody else could, and are led into the after life by The God of Nobody Really Cares.

Want more detail? Check out the UESP wiki.

EDIT: I must say, I've found a deep respect for the Redguards in Skyrim, they are much better portrayed than in Oblivion.

I've read a lot of the UESP wiki about the topic already haha :P... the Redguard's situation in relation to the Empire and the Aldmeri Dominion is completely unique and very very interesting. I was just hoping that people who had actually had experiecne with them in the past could flesh out my roleplay, because I think this could be a really good one....

Well most stereotypical Redguards are, as Hadvar says, sellswords/sailors. Do lots of mercenary work. you also have allegience to Hammerfell. Unless I'm mistaken, they're pretty patriotic. The Alik'r quest can be either way. Do you believe the warriors or not? Though if I were a Redguard I'd probably side with the Alik'r merely because you're a sellsword and you'd rather be payed to
Spoiler
kill one woman than a bunch of mercenaries.

sided with the woman cus i was ironically a female redguard, surprised there was no special dialogue of them trying to see if i was the woman they were looking for.

That's because they know what she looks like. You did not look like her.

Anyway... I advise looking up a bit of lore on Redguards, at least the UESP.

As far as the quest in question:
Spoiler
"Saadia"s story wouldn't hold up: The Alik'ir are warriors of the Alik'ir desert, which dominates the landscape of Hammerfell. A tie to such a cultural thing would indicate that the Alik'ir are similar in ideology to the "Sons (and Daughters) of Skyrim", making it HIGHLY unlikely that they are "mere" assassins/mercenaries in the pay of the Aldmeri Dominion. Also, Hammerfell successfully rebelled against both the Dominion and Empire, so it becomes further unlikely that the "True Redguards of Hammerfell" are in league with the Thalmor.

Spoiler
And, at the end, they take her alive, not kill her, revealing that she was the liar

Unfortunately, the Alik'ir warriors do not adequetely reward you at the end of the quest: I don't want a small pile of gold. I want one of those kickass Curved Swords!

Redguards are my favorite race and I've played TESA Redguard, so I can offer some insight. Redguards are badasses, and their pantheon doesn't give a [censored]. They're proud, but sensible. If you're looking to be the most typical Redguard, then you definitely want to be a warrior wielding a sword, and stay away from Necromancy or Illusion spells.

As far as who to side with in the Alik'r quest, that's just totally up to you. Depends on if your Redguard is part of the Alik'r or not.

Also, as far as the whole main questline goes, Redguards feel very similarly to how the Nords do about the end of the kalpa and Alduin returning to eat the world, so that's a nice bonus.

If you have any more specific questions, I'll fill in the blanks where I can, but it's hard to describe an entire race just in general. :P
