Blocking with Weapons is useless, I have a great idea for a

All the perks in the Block tree are basically for players who use shields and don't block with weapons. I think I have a way to fix this, but it will require modding a new skill.

Introducing parry.

The idea is simple, parries can be done in different ways.

The basics of parry:

attack parry: doing an attack with a weapon at the same time an enemy does theirs will block an incoming attack fully without taking damage, this means you can "block" while dual wielding, however it can stagger you depending on the enemy you are facing, also doesn't work against power attacks. It uses the same amount of stamina

block parry: blocking an incoming attack with a weapon will have the same effect except you cannot be staggered and they work on power attacks, this balances parrying with one weapon as oppose to dual wielding.

gameplay perks available from parry:

hopefully the creator will incorperate these as well

dodge: 35 parry to unlock - while in combat tap the "b" key, or any other key it is bound to, to backstep, alternatively, press "b" and "a" or "d" to doge to the left and right side respectively.

ripost: 100 parry to unlock - after "X" amount of successful parries, the enemy will be open for an attack and a sound effect will play, if you do an attack during this sound effect you will counter the enemy and stab them for MASSIVE DAMAGE!!!

The skill tree:

The skill tree will asthetically look like a sword clashing with an axe to create an overall X shape.

tier 1:

-attacking after a successful parry does 3% more damage (1/5)
-7%
-10%
-15%
-20%

tier 2:

-a perk that chances the opponent to stagger back after a successful parry - requires 20 parry

tier 3:

-dodge:dodge in a direction - requires 35

tier 4:

- a perk that allows you to duck under horizontal power attacks by crouching - requires 50

- a perk that reduces the cost of stamina a parry takes by 25% - 60

- a perk that allows you to negate the stagger from an attack parry - 70

tier 5:

- a perk that allows you to parry power attacks with an attack parry by using both mouse buttons to parry at the same time - 80

- a perk that chances you to disarm an opponent after a successful parry by 3% - 90

- riposte: after X amount of successful parries, you can counter-attack an enemy that does MASSIVE DAMAGE!

I hope someone takes this thread to heart and makes this mod, it would really make the game much better for someone who doesn't block with a shield.

For animations, the mod maker could make their own or use the in game animation that plays when you attack an enemy who has a shield up.

In the mean time thanks for reading and reply if you have any perk ideas or anything else. Comment to keep this thread alive! This would make an excellent edition to the game and must be seen by ALL!!!!

yeah but weapon block isn't really equally viable as shield blocking.

The fact that i cant even block normal attacks with weapon without taking damage bothers me a lot. You shouldn't take damage from blocking normal attacks, I can understand power attacks, arrows, magic, but seriously you can't even protect yourself from normal slashes?

Blocking with a shield only blocks 10-20% more damage depending on shield quality.

At the armorcap(567) there is no difference at all between blocking with shield and weapon.

WHICH should make sense, really. It's logical. What's the point of a shield when a simple weapon block is just as effective as a shield? Which is invented for that exact purpose. The fact a weapon block is partially effective is absolutely logical. I don't see your point and I am against this very idea.

Not like Bethesda could do this. They lack a good fighting engine.

It doesn't seem that way, and honestly, why take any damage from a blocked attack?

also, most of the left hand block perks are basically useless with weapon. At least that is what a friend tells me. Anyways, even if blocking with weapons is not as bad as I make it seem, I still think parries would make a great addition to the game because it allows you to block attacks as long as you time very closely, and it can be done with a shield as well, you can still do block parries and attack with shields.

shields were actually invented to be able to block things like arrows and spears along with swords. Swordsmen like samurai were perfectly fine blocking swords axes and hammers with other swords, axes, and hammers. So the idea of parry is to be able to create an in depth weapon blocking system that is only for blocking other weapons and not arrows.

this way blocking with shields and weapons are balanced.

Swinging your sword so that both swords connect in order to block, and that neither you or the opponent take any damage and you both stagger the same amount (basically, cancelling eachother out) would be good but seems tough to implement

Besides, Bethesda games have always lacked on the combat side of things. Playing Morrowind really made me appreciate Oblivion so much.

yeah they get better and better at it with each games, but the modding community has some really good combat mods for oblivion that implement things like this. I imagine creating the skill tree and actual skill for parrying will be harder than getting the basics down itself. Honestly I'll be happy if someone just makes a mod that allows you to block with weapons without taking damage from it. A dual wield block would be good too.
