A companion in the house and another one with me?

I had read before the game came out that you could only have one companion at a time. but I recently bought a house in whiterun and when I went to see my house lydia my old companion appeared in the house and has stayed there ever since then. But we are not married and I did not invite her to stay with me (Not that I'm complaining). The thing is I already have another new companion a female mage called illia that travels about with me. so now when I return home I have 2 women in the house. Sounds good lads I know but I never thought that this should be possible. Has anybody else got this kind of set up going on.

Lydia, being your housecarl, is sworn to defend your house. By sitting in your bedroom eating sweetrolls. :D

Seriously though, housecarls, when you become Thane and acquire your house, will just hang out there unless you ask them to go with you.

(Lydia lives at Breezehome for me, and Jordis at Proudspire. I travel with Erik exclusively.)

Jordis is in my house in Solitude, because her job as a HOUSEcarl is to carl my house.

I'm assuming carl means guard. But if it doesn't... [censored] the English language.

Then I have my wife, Borgahk the Steel Heart, who is also my main companion. So, I'll have two companions in my house, but I don't use both of them.
