In love with Skyrim but what's it lacking?

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 6:22 am

I just want to start saying I love this game. Compared to the other games its worlds ahead in voice acting, the world design graphics and storyline. I like how all the eldar scrolls characters have been given a real world grounding like the redguards being persian and imperials roman and khajit being reimagined. All very good.

However its lacking in three areas for me, one is helper interqction which is a bit lacking. It would have been nice to have quests to do for the helpers while they were with you, for them to develop trust with you as time goes on. At the moment they are very one dimensional. Secondly I cant understand the voice acting. Why have so many different voice actors but have them all say the same lines? Like shop keepers, you can have a male and female alchemy shop keeper say exactly the same line. Why not write it differently or allow the voice actors to make some variation themselves. I dont understand that.

Finally, and this is the biggest for me an almost game breaking mistake. Money sinks.

There are not enough money sinks in game. What I mean by this is ways to spend your money. The lesson you should always take when creating a world, basic dungeon master lesson 1 keep the player hungry.

There are lots of ways they could have done this. Daily wage for followers. House upkeep. Wife income. Funding your own shop or business. Repairing items, upkeep of items. Funds to support factions, etc etc. This would have meant a reason to keep doing missions beyond storyline.

Also the Great addition in fallout new vegas of hardcoe mode. They missed a tricck there. All the food in gqame why not make a rreason to eat it? Sleep and food should be a necessity. Add it as an option if yoou think some players wouldnt like it.

I hope beth looks at adding some of these things with a download, especially hardcoe and more Money sinks.

Well thats my ideas, what would you guys add to improve this already eady good game to a perfect game?

hmm well the game needed more mystery tbh and a super complex story (like the witcher or MW) more spells and weapons and cloths and armor.

if anyone played gothic 1, 2, 3, they would know what I mean, those games had a lot of interesting quests and I mean A LOT, I still remember the quest line to join the monastery in Gothic 2 and the quest to open the gateway to the raven island and those were some pretty amazing quests

The terrible economics is something that one should expect from Beth. They will never, it seems, get it right. If you're on pc than you're in luck since mods always brings sanity in this department.

Hmm...in my opinion.

1. Balance issues across the board. (Things being too easy for some people, too hard for others, crafting/enchanting removing need for exploration and questing, dragons/bosses dying too easily, dumb ai etc)

2. Poor amount of player options as most dialogue for the player seems written in a way that assumes the player is the stock nord dragonborn, quests are linear, there is no real use of speech skill/persuasion, quests cannot usually be failed, nor do they have branching or alternate outcomes, radiant events don't really have variations, and become repetitive.

3. Main plot feels very rushed, Alduin and his dragons do not feel like an actual world ending threat due to disorganization and incompetence, our hero seems 100% destined to win with little effort or sacrifice on their part.

4. World overall is very shallow, and is not dynamic in any real way. Nothing actually happens without the player's permission, and player actions do not have many lasting effects upon the world.

this in a nutshell :P

I love skyrim to bits but after 14 play-throughs and 4 months of constant playing I have to agree with this

the only really im would really like in the game is morailty and fame, similar to red dead redemption, in that game people reacted to how famous you are or how much of a saint/scumbag you are. I need a little more consequences for being a souless bastard, and if im the dragonborn/archmage/listener/theives's guild leader, i want people to KNOW i am

A decent journal, with (gasp) quest directions, opportunities for speechcraft, three times as many spell tomes, lock difficulty and improved reward system to make lockpicking worth investing in, recognition of achievements (where appropriate, why do only the guards know you are the Harbinger), quests with branches and consequences, something to do when you have joined the Bards', challenge at higher levels, ability to join more factions, mutually exclusive factions, follower/spouse interaction beyond the merest basics and a bit more variety of enemies.

I know what you mean about money sinks.

My new Imperial assassin has a minor gold sink, she never crafts anything, she is neurotic about eating or drinking anything found in dungeons or on corpses.
So all armour and weapons are purchased or looted (I'd prefer only purchased, but c'mon, there's some neat stuff to be found out there), all food and potions are purchased only... it's the best I can do, but naturally she's still stinking rich and I refuse to just dump gold down a well or something lol.

Also on food etc, I would love to see an optional hardcoe mode like Fallout: NV... even just a basic "hunger bar", it would really please players who enjoy hunting I think and give a nice incentive to do more cooking, I'm not sure about thirst though... they'd prolly need to add water and ergo waterskins/flasks or whatever then it gets more complex and less simple to implement, so just a basic all purpose "sustenance" bar which has some penalty if it depletes totally (stam debuff or slow health drain or w/e)

I enjoy the vampire gameplay where every now and then I think "damn, going to need to feed soon", so I'd really enjoy this idea too.

Disclaimer: I am happy with the game as it is, but it would be nice if even NPCs reacted to your appearance as well as what you've been doing in the game world. I created a horrific looking mage with black eyeballs, withered white skin and a evil white beard. He's a jerk wherever he goes unless he is just manipulating someone to get something cool. If someone saw him in the street, I'd imagine they'd either want to find an opportunity to beat his head in or would stay as far away from him as possible. I imagine that shopkeepers wouldn't want him hanging around their shop and would either not sell to them or "reserve" times that they are willing to (when other customers aren't around). Also, I plan on making my mage a cannibal (via one questline I discovered in a previous playthrough) and possibly even a vampire to boot. So, he's the most repulsive guy on the planet. But, apparently everyone in the world of Skyrim is a saint, because they definitely aren't judging this book by its cover... and if they know about my deeds, they are certainly showing an impressive amount of charity, even entrusting me to certain side quests. I role-play to get beyond this because I realize that having that may be asking too much based on timelines, budgets, resources, and technological limitations. But it would be cool as hell to have.
