So I was playing the other night innocently hunting some mudcrabs when out of nowhere some Argonian fool in Dark Brotherhood gear comes out of nowhere and tries to kill me. I turned around quick and panic swung my hammer and smashed his face in. He had a note on him with orders to kill me. I never had that happen in my other playthrough (level 47) so it was interesting to see a new random event. But then, a few in game days later, it happened again, and I killed that person too. I started thinking if there was something I did to trigger someone to hire the Dark Brotherhood to kill me. Anyone know if this is just a random event or if there is a trigger? I did kind of murder Faendal.... and steal my training money back.... and dump his body in the river.... yeah....

On a side note, I also had hired thugs come after me once for stealing something from Belethor, but I don't think I actually stole anything from him, which kind of confused me.
