Skyrim Disc Question

Post » Mon May 07, 2012 5:09 am

Hello.

A friend of mine received his Skyrim boxed edition early. Obviously, he can't install it yet, but what concerns me is that he explored the disk and found no data on it, just a system that will direct the user to Steam for the download. This is a huge problem for me. I've pre-ordered a physical copy of the game specifically because I download at 30-40 kb/s, maximum.

If the disc has no data then I'd like to cancel my physical copy so that I can start pre-loading with Steam *now*.
Can anyone confirm or refute this rumor for me? It'd be sickening if it were true... I wouldn't even get the box until gone midday, because I live in the sticks and the post is always very late.

Thanks in advance for any answers.

If he is your friend, and he told you that, why do you need people here to confirm?

I smell something fishy here, and it's not a stick....

Any Steamworks game I have ever bought a hard copy for has always had all the game data on the disk. However there was at least 1 game (can't remember which, want to say Witcher 2?) that actually made me download the game even after already installing it. That was a mess up on Steam's part though not the developer.

Sounds like either your friend doesnt know how to check a DVD, or his drives not working properly. That, or youre just trolling.

I don't have it yet, but I can say with 99.99999999% confidence that the disc has all the game data on it. You will only need the internet connection for the initial steam activation

I'm pretty sure the disc should have the same data as the pre-load. Basically just the data without anything to run it (.exe and the like). Otherwise that's just lazy, because all the steamworks games I've gotten physical copies of have ALL been that way.

Heh, didn't expect the suspicion, but I'll just stay above it.

I asked here because I can't stand over his shoulder- we're far apart from each other- and he's prone to moments of derp.
I thought someone more.. stable I guess, might have gotten their disc early as well. So I asked here.

Sorry to raise your heckles.

Edit: Ahh, I'm pretty happy if most of you are sure that it can't be true. Thanks for that, I'll take what is probably a very small risk and keep the physical copy coming. Sorry for pushing my nerves on you all, but who among us would say that a possible barrier between ourselves and Skyrim is a small issue?

Quite.

I wouldn't be surprised, a lot of games like Cataclysm have been doing that lately, to what advantage I have no clue, idk how they save money or anything by still including the disc.

Calling out a troll by the name I.e. "Troll/trolling" is against Rules for one, though both the rule and the concept are ridiculous.

Second we wouldn't know. PC copies of Skyrim need to be verified by Steam and only then can it run on offline mode.

Whether it has data on disc or not I don't know. They could also randomly have the data on it and make you install it but it'd be pointless.

Unless a Skyrim dev or early physical PC copy holder can verify we don't know.

But the least you should know is that Steam verification is necessary so you'll need a internet connection

A little off-topic, but does anyone know whether we will still need the disk in the DVD drive to play after we install? If it's a Steam game, does it mean that all the files are copied from the disk to the computer, and the disk is no longer required?

Steam games no longer require the disk, as steam is the equivalent to having the disk. In fact you don't even need the disk to install, you could just put your CD key into steam and download it, but installing from the disk is usually faster depending on your internet connection.

Once the game is registered in your steam account you don't have to worry about losing/breaking the disk as your copy will always be available to download via steam.

Unfortunately, for all major releases, things only get worse until the release day. Tomorrow is going to be madness...

OK, thanks. I didn't even realize I would be getting a bonus Steam version of the game when I ordered

I have rather poor downloading speed too OP, so I also hope for the disk to have all of Skyrim on it.

I can't think of any game that didnt though, so Im confident that it has it on there. =}

Technically you're just getting the Steam version of the game as you can't play without steam running. If you are playing on a computer without a steady internet connection or a laptop you can force steam into offline mode if your game is up to date patch wise. The only benefit to buying the game in a store is the fact you get a physical map, a manual, and the fact that it should cut the time you need to download if you have a slow connection.

Unfortunately, you made still need to download to play. Not all the content may be on the disk, and there is a day 1 patch(although I'm unaware of how big said patch is)

When I got my copy of Shogun 2 it installed from the disk, but then downloaded from steam. I'm not sure if it was just a patch or if some of the game was downloaded too. All I know is that it was the longest disk based installation I've ever sat through.

It's better to download steam beforehand. From what I've read in another forum I frequent, the version of steam that came with Rage was broken and caused problems.
