Stupid question re: Steam Install

Post » Tue May 08, 2012 6:06 am

I've preordered a physical copy of Skyrim from Game and realise it can't be activated by Steam til midnight. Fine. But I've seen a couple of people suggest they put the key into Steam (when they received their copy) and still had to download the game? This isn't the case right? I can install straight from the disc when it arrives? Am worried I won't be able to play at midnight as it will take an age for me to download the whole thing if I need to...

Sorry for the stupid question. Did look for the Steam thread but didn't see an answer that was clear enough to my brain lol.

You have 2 options, you can either enter your key on steam and pre-load, making the disk utterly useless (I chose this route) or you can wait until midnight and install from the disk, meaning you'll start playing at around 20 minutes past midnight or so. It's just the way steam works unfortunately.

Enter the key and download? HMMM, that seems quite vulnerable to piracy....

Nope. The files you download from Steam are encrypted, so it's safe. They are decrypted once the game is released.

And it doesn't include all the files anyway, as far as I know the .exe isn't included, which makes playing it impossible no matter what.

Nope, pirates will have to wait like the rest of the world before they can crack the game :bolt:
