The reviews vs. fan expectations.

Post » Tue May 08, 2012 1:21 pm

I've been checking various reviews since early today. Most notably would be Gametrailers which I often check for most games I may or may not play. I noticed a trend however which I thought I'd bring up. See, we have reviews for a reason. They tell us what to expect from a game, whether it's good or bad, it's drawbacks and it's great moments. So, why is it that we have all these people freaking out because someone said something bad about it? Isn't that the point of a review? Would you rather they blatantly lie to you, and if so, what on earth is the point of having a review if you can't handle it's negative aspects?

In my honest opinion.

Never trust a review, or base any purchase decisions on a review.

Make that decision for yourself, by researching and/or playing a demo or watching streaming videos.

There are several games that got high scores in the past that remain unboxed and sitting on my pile of shame.

I've actually seen more negative reactions to the reviews from haters than from fans. Hell, I've even heard people claiming that Bethesda bribed everyone to give good reviews since Skyrim can't possibly be better than Morrowind or even good at all.

On the other hand, a few reviewers really don't know what they're talking about and some clearly aren't cut out for anything more complicated than Call of Duty. One reviewer said he got lost often and took points off, another claimed to have beaten the main quest in two hours (and this was supposedly a plus, which is even weirder when another review said the MQ took 65 hours), etc. Most reviews are decent however. In any case, being an Elder Scrolls fan who loved Oblivion to death and doesn't have any unrealistic expectations I'm sure I'll enjoy Skyrim more than a lot of the reviewers seem to have enjoyed it.

Well, that's just it. The reviews that give harsh opinion, like GT, are being slammed because they say something negative. They gave it a 9.3, and that's not good enough for people.

I don't see anyone freaking out. Which review are you referencing? If it's the one where the guy takes away points because there is not a gameplay feature, that's a legitimate cause for concern. Many games do not have other games' features or playstyles. When you start judging gameplay based on what you WANTED versus what you're GIVEN, you've stopped being an unbiased professional.

You should decide for yourself, reviews can be wrong.

This is another good point. It's just plain stupid to criticize Elder Scrolls for not being multiplayer when it was never meant to be multiplayer and the style is completely meant for singleplayer.

Go to Gametrailers, and check out the review comments. People are angry it has the same score as MW3.

There's no reason that I shouldn't hear from people who are in the industry as well. You realize that interviews with PR people like Pete Hines, they're trying to SELL you the game. A reviewers job is to tell you whether it's worth it or not. Now, even so, I still bought a copy, but I can at least accept that there will be flaws they can't touch on being how large it is. That's not the issue of this thread though. The issue is the people getting upset because they might say something bad about it. And if they don't like it for what it says, good or bad, what's the point of having reviews?

Technically it could be implemented, like entering a friends game and acting like a companion who can take loot back to their game. I suggested this to Pete for future installments, haven't heard back.
