A short tale of random wanderings in Skyrim

Post » Wed May 09, 2012 2:55 am

This is the story of me running away from everything as I bumble through Skyrim. After I did the tutorial, I immediately headed East to Riften. After getting my sense of direction mixed up and heading East, I corrected myself and wandered into the labrynth of mountains and cliffsides. In one road between a cliff, I met some civilians travelling somewhere for a wedding. I had the option to threaten to take their stuff, but since I was level 1 and had already almost died from 3 wolves, and they had a bodyguard, I let them go. After a surprisingly long time in there I reached Rift and came across an alchemist's shack. Surprisingly it didn't have an alchemy set, but it had some indredients including a gourd and a spell tome of sparks. I then followed the river to get to Riften, and came across a large fort on the way. I died several times from wildlife.

Once I eventually reached Riften, it was foggy. There were a few dingy looking shacks on the docks and some arched bridges. One of the shacks was a fishery. It was very melancholic. A guard stopped me from going in from the dock gate and wouldn't tell me why. I went around to the front gate and the guard tried to trick me into giving him free coin, which I caught him out on. He let me in. I looked around the small but interesting city, going down to the lower area to find a few houses/shops in the side of the canol. I found one door that led to the "ratway". I decided to check it out, assuming the theives guild was here, and maybe I was right, but I got attacked and nearly killed by someone so I decided I should come back later. I talked to a guy who said something about borrowing money to get an order for the stables and having the stuff be stolen, so he couldn't pay off his debt. For some reason, I thought the person he wanted me to talk to was the one he bought the stuff from, in Whiterun, so stupidly, I set off that way.

On my way Northwest, I came across a man who said he had been attacked and wanted me to escort him back to his camp safely. After I started walking, I started to realise that the only people with camps were usually bandits, but I thought I'd give him the benefit of the doubt. Yep, hostile bandits, it was a trap! I hastily ran off and found a farm owned by a Dunmer farmer from Vivec, the only person in the world who can cultivate Nirnroots. I took all her Nirnroots and she offered to buy my gourd. Time to go. I eventually realised that Rift is actually a very high-up place, and there was a huge drop into the volcanic tundra region of Windhelm to the North. I decided to take the fun route: Down a cascade of steep and deep waterfalls. I died twice and got stuck once doing this, but it was worth it. The volcanic tundra was beauftiful. Everything was gray and hazy, there were hot springs everywhere, and (probably due to the mammoth skeletons) I felt like I was in the elephant graveyard from the Lion King. It was ominous, definitely.

The world of Skyrim was definitely feeling much bigger than Oblivion as I ran West and found myself near another huge waterfall, in a truly beautiful scene or rocky cliffs. At the top was a bandit fort that stretched across the river with a bridge. The bandit who came outside told me it was a toll gate. I didn't believe her and shot a few arrows at her, killing her. However, I still found myself being shot by someone I couldn't see, so I ran away. Now I was looking out at the tundra at sunset, which was majestic and open. I climbed a small hill to find a standing stone. Yum. Unfortunately a female destruction mage was there and she blew me to bits. I respawned before the hill and ran away. I began to approach Whiterun, which is surrounded by a hell of a lot of farms, by the way, and went around the West side to the gate. I had to cross a moat to get in, and there were guard towers everywhere, it really was a fortress town. And now I'm tired of writing.

But yeah, when I say this game is beautiful guys, I mean none of the screenshots do it justice compared to the real thing (Partly due to the choices of screenshots compared to what I saw, partly due to the wonder of seeing it all in motion).

Yeah. Personally I like the healing automatically thing, but I think it's too fast.

Thanks for the post. It makes me look forward to my release time tonight even more!

What makes it all the better is that I got about 5 parts for my computer in today! When I get off of work in a few hours, I will be going home, spending some time with the wife and baby, then slamming this thing together and twiddling my thumbs while I wait on 11pm!

I got a new motherboard, video card, ram, processor, and power supply... so basically I'm building a new computer for Skyrim ;)

I was a bit concerned at the fact that I would have to run the game in mediocre visual settings. That just wouldn't do at all!

Haha, awesome story :D

That's the best thing about ES games for me, you can get lost in exploring for hours on end then when you talk to someone else about it you never, ever had the sam experience.

9 hours played, 6 quests completed overall, 1 Hold visited, 1(!) dungeon cleared. Game is absolutely massive.

Also spent around 20 minutes reading one book. This will keep you busy for a very long time.

It's weird, I wasn't sure how mine would run, and it actually reccomended it for low settings, but then I put it up to medium and upped all the sliders to max manually afterwards and it doens't lag at all.

Wolves (god have I seen a lot of them), goats, elk, deer, hairy cows, horkers (later obviously), and I think that's it but I may be forgetting some things.

Also I read a book about this boy who summoned a daedra to find out how to enchant a dress for his mum, and the daedra tricked him into allowing him to kill the boy, and rip out his heart and trap his soul in a black soul gem and then do the same to his mum. Dark stuff.

It took a long time to get between cities. Probably about twice as long as Oblivion. More interesting stuff inbetween though. The place feels much bigger, though it's supposedly not. I'll tell you what I didn't like though, that it seems all the towns/cities besides the big 5 use the same buildings. I have half a mind to learn how to 3D model just to replace some to make it more interesting.

Nice, man, thanks for that. Maybe I'll invest in a Calm Animal spell early on to chill out all these wolves!

Yeah, hope they don't start to feel like cliff racers.
