So, First Impressions?

Post » Tue May 08, 2012 11:47 pm

Just wondering what peoples first impressions of this game are? So far I am not all that impressed however I havent really been past Riverwood so it is a bit early to judge, had a quick look at Whiterun but that is about it. Now I dont know about you guys but I am really not digging this new UI, its almost as if it was designed specifically for consoles with the PC not even given a second thought, I have also run into a heap of problems where because I like to define my own key bindings a lot of the key bindings when using the UI dont work as well as just numerous glitches with the UI in general, also what is up with not being able to bind keys to the number pad? Will this be changed in a future patch? Also while it is less noticable on the males what is up with the wierd pixelation of the nose and chin areas on females? Should I wait for the first patch before I start playing seriously?

So far it has been a fairly negative first impression however hopefully the game will pick up and make me forget its flaws, anyone having a more positive first impression?

I agree that the ui could be better, but i am so happy this far with everything else that i really dont care. I only played for 2 hours and i am getting used to the UI so feeling negative about the game because of such small issue seems redundant.

Its not just the UI but lots of smaller things as well, as I said this is just a first impression and I hopefully the game will offer more to make me forget about these flaws.

PS3 gamer here. Positives: UI + menus system and controls = perfect. So quick and intuitive. Graphics are great, music is great, combat so far has been fun and better than Oblivion, I'm in gaming heaven right now.

Negatives: I personally don't like the 3D map, I'd have preferred a normal map. Some graphical annoyances with blocky/flickering shadows. Still uses old save file system, so you gotta be careful not to overwrite game saves with different characters.

Can't make bindings with the numpad? Srsly?

Hell, if this is the case, I'll have a hard time even playing (I'm left handed, been using numpad as controls for 15 years).

Oh, Man, Bethesda, say it ain't so.

You can't bind numbers (1-0), they are used as hot keys for weapon/spell selection. But, you should still be able to bind to the number pad itself (w/ num lock turned off, it uses the keyboard D pad and a few symbols), it would be stupid to remove the ability to bind to the num pad as lefties use it all the time.

Played 11 hours on the 360 so far........

No texture issues, no glicthes other than with the talking once or twice.

I have no idea what I spent 11 hours doing because I feel like i'm not even anywhere near finished, I've only done a couple of quests.

The new cave/lairs are awesome, shouts are great, magic/weapon/shield mix n' match is awesome.

Companions! The Companion "task" system allows you to tell them to attack/steal/sit/grab/go anywhere you say.

Character models are amazing, the game feels massive and has a great mix of environments.

NPC's react to what you wear and comment on it. Hepas of hidden quests and secrets that make it worth while to talk to everyone.

Skill trees add a ton of options to who you are going to be and how you will play.

I'll be playing this game for a very long time.

Exactly this, only on 360 for me.

And the texture glitch but I assume that will be fixed soon.

So what would it be like if we were to use a controller on the PC version do you think?

Is this true? I am left-handed and I ALWAYS in all my games change the key bindings to the keypad. In fact I've never met a game in the past couple of years that I've played that I haven't been able to do this, and even in Oblivion I am able to do this.

I can even tell you the rundown I use in almost all games with keypad:
5 - forward
2 - backward
4 - left
6 - right
1 - jump (or similiar)
. (reload)
0 - interact
7 (reserved for health - potions, med-packs etc.)
8 - Hud or map menus
+ sneak
page down - quick save
right arrow - sprint
3 - used for throwing grenades, etc.
- - sheath, holster
etc.

I might have to make a few changes or variations according to the game. I have never been able to use the normal format for playing a game, unless it is a keyboard only game like Need For Speed, Lego Computer games, etc.

What is THIS? We are not able to key bind to the keypad!?!?!?

We're almost in the year 2012 and have the newest game from Bethesda and cannot bind keys to the keypad? I prepurchased this game and have it downloaded from Steam already. Please this cannot be true!!! Please I want my money back if it is. I cannot believe this.

PC Gamer reporting in:

Negatives:
  • RPG elements seem over simplified. A caveat on this one--I've been playing D&D based RPGs since I was ~4 (my dad was a gamer). One of my earliest memories is playing Neverwinter and learning what 1d6 meant. That being said, I really disliked how simplified character creation is is. You don't see specific bonuses attributed to the races. Just generals. And you can't input skill points specifically. That was annoying as all hell to me.
  • The UI is absolutely terrible on the PC, almost a dealbreaker. The radial menus are hell to use through--you need to use the keyboard to scroll through menu and submenu and then item by item. Clicking works--sometimes.

Luckily I have a Logitech gamepad lying around. I didn't feel like shelling out $50 to buy the supported 360 controller and adapter, so I hunted around for a way to trick the game into thinking my Logitech was a 360 controller. I found something, and have been using that since. The game is terrific and all the UI issues are gone with a controller. I haven't minded the menus since then. I don't know if I would enjoy this game without the gamepad, though. The menus are just really, really terrible for keyboard and mouse use. You can only look at one thing at a time, stats are relatively hidden, hotkeys are hard to set up, etc etc. Very obviously a console port. If I didn't have a gamepad the bad controls might have been a dealbreaker. At the least I would've waited for the modders before really investing time in it.

  • NPC AI is as herptarded as ever.

  • This is minor, and I don't really care, but the graphics are poor by 2011 standards.

Luckily modders will fix all of the above eventually.

Positives:
  • The gameplay is as solid as it was in Oblivion. Combat's smooth, exploring is fun, etc etc.

I'll go back and edit this once I've been playing longer. I was dissapointed in how little Bethseda tried to adapt it to the PC, but, life goes on. I'll probably spend as much time on it as I did Oblivion and Morrowind.

I hope so; I'll see in a few hours anyway. Games ought to be able to distinguish between '5' and 'numpad 5' though - they are actually different input values, unless Skyrim considers them both to be 'hotkey 5' - which would svck.

I might fire up Intellipoint and set up a remap profile for Skyrim, if it's too annoying.
