Skyrim and Machinima

Post » Wed May 09, 2012 1:36 am

Anyone else wondering how suitable Skyrim will be for producing machinima films? I know that the gameplay trailer was produced in-engine, but I am wondering if there are any indications that we will be able to produce dramatic scenes like that.

Has there not been any indication either way on this? It's not make-or-break for me. But if good machinima can be produced within Skyrim, it is yet another niche in digital entertainment it can reach. Look how popular "Chuck Norris in Oblivion" and "Ken Dozin Must Die" are, silly though they may be.

I'd consider it doubtful. Single player games are not usually the best, as they have limited actors. But you can probably throw together some comics with the toolset.

I've seen some single-actor stuff with Garry's mod, but that's a toolbox in itself.

I plan on making machinima with it. As long as it has similar console commands to Fallout 3 and Oblivion, it will be fine. Check my sig to see what I have done recently in Oblivion and Fallout. There's a lot to learn but its worth it.

Making music videos of your character will definitely be possible though, and fun!

Check out Ross Scott's "Civil Protection" series. He does it all through scripting, not Garry's Mod.

Those are pretty good. An indication of what can be done within the engine, as applied to two different forms of film making.

I was thinking about that series specifically. I forgot that he used scripting.

LOL, come on man... It's a hobby, plain and simple. Telling anyone in this world that they should be doing anything with their time other than what they choose to do with it is about the same as saying, "Change what you consider to be fun. I have deemed your chosen activity to be not worthy of my time, and therefore it should be worthy of no-one's time."

I generally agree with your post and shouldn't of said that about it but the one thing that doesn't jive with your logic is people that play WOW. That actually is a situation where deeming something to be a waste of time holds true. It is a game that svcks the well being and soul of people who play it and they deserve every negative critical comments that get thrown their way. It really is an abomination of existence and Blizzard should be ashamed of themselves. On the other hand, Starcraft 2 rocks the house and it completely filled with awesomeness if I may be so bold.

Considering Valkyrie's awesome Oblivion machinima (are you reading this Valkyrie?! :unsure2: ), I'm pretty sure Skyrim will be great for machinima.

And how can anyone forget Oblivion Chuck Norris's series? Those were so well made :)

He has quite a few videos, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XwTSBRlrqrw was the first one I watched and the other ones can be found at his channel (or at the side of the video :P ).

Looking back, the editing isn't as amazing as I thought it was back then but I still love his videos, they have a great story and all :)

BTW I won't link the Chuck Norris's series because of the swearing and all which isn't appreaciated by the mods but you can search for it on Youtube.

If I had the time, I would make a combination Walkthrough/Machinima of the the main quest, using only resources that came with the game and voice-over dialiogue for a scripted NPC acting in the role of the player. Camera work and editing would be the key.
But I don't have time, so I won't be making it...

As far as machinimability of Skyrim, there's really no sure fire way to tell until the game, you know, actually comes out. Beth says that the Creation kit will be similar to the ones for Oblivion and Morrowind, so modders will have an easier time learning their way around it. It would also make sense that the devs would mold their engine and scripting language to what they're used to when they used Gamebryo. I'm sure there'll be a command console system, and I hope it's better then the one used for Oblivion. Fallout 3 had better FOV flying camera controls in 3rd person mode and the ability to force poses in the console with "playidle" without fooling with menus. (OBSE 20 brought the command PLAYIDLE, but I haven't figured out how to use it as I'm not a scripter...yet.)

If Skyrim is similar to Oblivion, maybe my personal adventures may help you. I haven't been in the "scene" that long, but I've learned a lot.

I started learning how to machinimate Oblivion almost a year ago when I saw CNiO and KDMD. I saw them and said "OOOOO I WANNA DO THAT TOOO!!" and fooled around with the mods and techniques they had in their YouTube tutorials.
For about 6 months I learned many new mods and techniques (even taking a list of vanilla/OBSE scripting functions on the CS wiki and tried to see if I could get them to work in console) and learned what editing software to use, what codecs to encode in for YouTube, ect. That's not even half the battle, because then you'll have to get a script together, film it, edit it, ect, find others to work with you, ect. People will tell you "YEAH I'LL HELP YOU!" and then don't. REALIZE that YOU will be the one doing EVERYTHING. I'm one of the crazy few who finds machinima worthwhile. xD

It's November now, and I have made 3 Oblivion machinima episodes, released episode 1 this past Tuesday, and about to start work on episode 4. (http://www.youtube.com/user/FedoraRepublic)

Honestly, if you want to machinimate Skyrim, my suggestion? LEARN how to use the wiki and mod the game. Learn how to install mods ect, and how to recover your installation if mods funk up your game. Learning how the game works is key in a good production. I think the people behind Oblivion Script Extender is going to make one for Skyrim, so keep an eye out for that. And also, GOOD LUCK, and don't give up! If you want someone to chat with about machinima and stuff, feel free to PM me. :)

Where's the LOVE, man?! Hahaha! xD

Based on what I've seen on YouTube that those who have been fortunate enought to get their copies earlier, particularly the way they handle the opening scene, I would say that with a little clever mod work and attention to perspectives and angles, Shyrimm will make a perfect environment for machinima production.

I can't wait to see what some people come up with...

Hoping to be able to pick up my copy of Skyrim tomorrow.
