where do you go to craft your own spells?

I went to the Mage college thinking that'd be the logical place but that wasn't it O.o

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Magic_Overview

At the bottom of the Spell section:

"Custom spell-making is not available in Skyrim."

This may be my only quarrel with the game.... I was looking forward to insane and impractical spells like 100 meter paralyze spells and such. :)

There is no spell crafting this game sadly. And few spells as well.

It will be the first mod that I will be anticipating. My only big concern for the game.

The spell creation literally broke oblivion for me. It was way over powered and too simple to make an all powerful spell. Almost every spell I created was so powerful it made the game pointless.

So no, you can no longer make spells. It was a bad idea in the first place as players are, naturally, going to ruin the games balance with such a huge ability.

Put one effect in one hand, and another effect in the other hand.

Bam, spell making!

You have chosen a poor time to decide to get details about Skyrim. The mages guild is gone, spellmaking does not exist.

Overpowered? Considering half the spells that were actually effective used all your mana in one cast, I don't think that is overpowered...

Taking away something that should have been improved was a [censored] move.

I'm glad they cut down on the spells. In oblivion it just got so cluttered and it became a pain to go through my spell list

Agreed. Not to mention it was a legacy feature... It was the only reason I played a caster. I will be waiting for a mod to replace it before touching anything besides restoration. It needed balancing, wont argue with that. Even if it wasn't you can elect to use the pre made spells trained from mages. Removing it was not necessary.

You're severely mistaken. The Mages Guild is still in the game, its called the College of Winterhold.

Really? then you clearly didn't know how to make easily over powered spells.

Gems such as 100% chamillion were possible, and it wasn't impossible nor did it take much magicka AT ALL to make a drain health 500 for 1 second. It took maybe a quarter to a third of my bar and killed everything I encountered.

I find it was completely necessary. To each our own though. Like I said it ruined a lot of oblivion for me. Once I could create my own spells I just went to town. Made a 100% chamillion combo, made a drain health 500 for 1 second, made a 20 second paralyze spell. Many of the spells just weren't balanced like the core ones were.

I believe the main reason here though was due to the OP aspect and how people will always ruin the games balance in some way with such a tool while also due to the fact that magic is much more complex now then just shooting a pixel with your hand with the same effects as 20 other spells just magnified.

The spells have to be able to be combined if wielded in both hands as well as the idea that they look different from each other and have different properties now. In oblivion destruction literally recycled the same spell appearances over and over again. The spells now look and play differently.

I mainly blame the overpowered aspect though. It got pretty bad for me. Eventually I just modded it out. I also didn't really feel like I was actually creating anything. Just giving already made spells different durations and magnitudes.

Not only that but it also ruined any excitement of finding new spells from new trainers.

I prefer learning my spells from other masters. It feels odd that you somehow just sat at an alter and invented a new spell that no one else in the world ever thought of, not even the master mages.

I know well enough how to make overpowered spells, probably more so than most. Most specifically chains of them. I was agreeing with the fact that it shouldn't have been removed. I used to use the extended hot keys mod for this, otherwise I would skip spell making. I had close to 40 hot keys most of the time.

I loved my fortify restoration 60 for 1-2 seconds followed by a fortify restoration for 120 seconds. Both would cost nothing to cast at all. Then you do fortify destruction for whatever it takes to hit 100 for 120 seconds. Then lay into them with my weakness magicka and fire each 100%. Hit them with a sword that did another 100% each. Then do 3 successive 3 damage for 30 seconds. Etc, etc.

That drain health spell was a stock spell sold by vendors.

Also paralyze is useless. Damage fatigue is cheap to cast and lasts ages.

As for the chameleon, I always found that distasteful. Never tried it out. Self control is key here, not trying to offend. You have to weigh your choices carefully. I knew it would destroy my interest in the game so i skipped it.

It would have been an accomplish able task to balance the spell making. The reason I am upset is the loss of the ability to be creative and make use of things most people would not think of up front. Now we are limited to this spell does this and nothing else. Also someone commented about wielding two different spells in each hand. Didn't they say you could not fire both at the same time?
