APOFPO Military overseas

Post » Wed May 09, 2012 11:51 am

Hi Ive searched both here and steams website and have not found anything, so sorry if this has already been discussed. I'm in the military serving overseas but our on base store gets most game titles and media the dates they are released in the US. My question is that if I buy the physical PC game on base will I still be region locked by steam because the regional publisher wont release the game till December. I ask because this is the issue I ran into with Rage which was extremely frustrating, due to holding a legitimately purchased game from an authorized distributor only to be denied to even install the game on my own PC because Steam cant get out of its own way. Rage was only frustrating because it was locked for only a few days but I really don't want to purchase a game only to be told by a third party program I cant use it for over a month. Is there ANY plans to work around this? If not please explain to me why you even authorize the sale of a product your customers cant use?

I'am pretty sure if you're buying Skyrim from the BX it would be the US version though I could be wrong. I'd also like to thank you for your service as well and stay safe!

why should steam block your [censored] if you're trying to play a physical copy of the game? it shouldn't even need to connect to the internet.

If they try to lock you out just send a fireteam to steams headquarters. I'm sure they'll work around it then.

The copies at the BX are the US copies and I agree the install shouldn't need an internet connection. But the problem I ran into with Rage, which concerned me with Skyrim, was that when the game starts to load up for install steam launches and request the CD key and then after entering it notifies you that "This is game is not released yet, installation canceled". I couldn't install the game without an internet connection nor with steam not already installed on computer. Thanks for the support!

Just to be clear, your from the US, u will buy a physical copy to play oversea's in a region were the game will unlock later then 11/11/11 ?
If so, easy.
Download & Instal http://anchorfree.com/downloads/hotspot-shield/
Basicly it's a program that makes it easy for non-computer savvy people to connect to a US VPN , in short: it will make steam believe your currently in the US.
Once u instaled & decrypted the Skyrim launcher on steam, you can turn it off and play in offline (steam) mode.

Be warned that buying games using a fake ip in another region to get a 'discount' (f.ex europeans buying at a US price, aka cheaper) is putting yourself in high risks of being banned on steam and possibly sued for fraud.
Also i have no idea if there are any rules regarding using a VPN on a military base.. so inform yourself or use at your own risk.

The install does need an Internet connection, probably only after it's installed and ready to play, for the one-time activation. Then you can take it offline and not worry about it.

Did you register Steam in the US before you were deployed? Or did you activate your Steam account in another country? I think that would be the deciding factor.

If your Rage would not unlock, I would assume Skyrim would be the same.

I did try a US proxy provided by my internet company but steam just got stuck in a patching loop until it said it was unable to connect. I activated my steam account when I got here two years ago and had no problems with them for little over a year but in the past 10 months buying or using Steam has become problematic as they randomly lock my account because they say I'm located overseas even though my IP address has never changed.

Just had this happen to me, bought Skyrim on base attempted to install only to have Steam tell me it is not released yet in my region, trying to figure out a way around this.
