New to Skyrim - first impressions

Hi

I am new to Skyrim. I normally play MMOs a lot, EQ, WoW, LotRO, Hellgate, TabRas, WAR, STO and many many more... I was even part of a betatest weekend of SWTOR recently.

I saw Skyrims gameplay movies on YouTube and decided, to buy this game today. It is my first single player game since Star Wars Battlefront II.

The Graphics are very good. I like the cutscene at the beginning of the game. But when the action started I was a bit lost. The steering of the char is ... well let me formulate it diplomatically ... a bit uncommon. I normally steer the char with the WASD keys while aditionally giving direction with the mouse (right button clicked). If I do this here, the char just gets slow.
The rest of the steering is strange as well. Common sense tells me to use the escape key to leave a menu and Tab to take someone into aim. Thats how all the other games do it. It may not necessarily be the BEST way to do it, but it's the only one I know.
Constantly hitting the wrong buttons ist frustrating to say the least and there seems to be no tutorial to speak of.
Come on, in which game do you have to press M to attack someone.

Everything is very strange and at the moment, my motivation to play on is gone completely. I am just stumbling around being killed. lol.

Ok, call me noob, flame me, I don't care. These are my first impressions and they are what they are. I am a bit sad, because I really thought, this game would svck me in for the month to come till SWTOR.

Well, maybe I give it another chance tomorrow.

Actually the key/mouse mapping is pretty much the way all these types of games are. Almost exactly as it was in Oblivion, Fallout 3, Borderlands, Dragon Age, etc. going back a decade. Maybe MMO's are the ones that are different, although the only one I've played (DDO) is pretty much just like Skyrim and all the others.

Right mouse button to give direction? I've never played a game that does that. Just move the mouse around to "steer". WASD makes you go in a direction.

This should be there, I agree with you.

and Tab to take someone into aim. Thats how all the other games do it. It may not necessarily be the BEST way to do it, but it's the only one I know.

Strange, I've never played a game that does that. TAB almost always brings up either the map or some part of your inventory/skills screen in every game I've played. I'm not sure what you mean by "take someone into aim". If you mean to zoom in like to sniper, games like Borderlands and other shooters I've played it's usually holding down the right mouse button to zoom and aim.

Constantly hitting the wrong buttons ist frustrating to say the least and there seems to be no tutorial to speak of.

Eh? Left mouse click attacks. That's standard even in MMO's.

Good luck!

Well I like the game so far, but I have to restart already because the quest when you get to Riverwood won't complete to move on to the next. The game needs alot of fixes before it'll be flawless or atleast close...lol
