Skyrim PC version is a lazy port

Post » Wed May 09, 2012 7:53 am

Buyers beware. Despite all the pre release footage and interviews talking about the console version, the console graphics, the focus on the console control scheme, when Bethesda said PC would be getting a custom UI I thought they might be putting some effort into it.

I was wrong.

The PC version is buggy, rife with glitches, but that's the small issue.

The graphics options aren't in the game. They all have to be manually changed in the ini file. The mouse has smoothing that you can't turn off, the speed values are off, so actually using the mouse is a pain in the ass. Field of view is locked. The UI itself seems like it wasn't made at all for the PC, it's all scrolling through menu, a la Oblivion and consoles.

And, I'll say it again, you can't turn the compass off, which was the most hated feature of Oblivion for many people. We were told you could. We were lied to.

So, PC gamers beware, for 60 dollars you're getting an unfinished console port. Bethesda, you lost a customer. This isn't why PC sales are low, it's because you don't put any effort into them. Hell, the graphics are still DX9. Blame piracy in interviews all you want, but this is the reason. Always on DRM (Steam), bugs, bad controls, few graphics options, and what options are there are dated 6 years old, shoddy combat, and all at the low low price of SIXTY DOLLARS.

Actually, you can change the FoV in the .ini settings.

I agree with that. Well other than what you're saying about the game itself, I have yet to receive it! :D
But ya, console ports to pc needs to stop happening. It's because developers are lazy...
The only console ports I ever enjoyed was force unleashed, but only because it was sw... I hate ports :(
I'm going to pretend I didn't read this!

What keeps you from changing the graphics options in the launcher?

apart from the controls i think the game is brilliant on PC , its easy to change the FOV and takes less than 10 seconds of searching and less than 3 to do.

this game is a vast improvement over oblvion . I've played for 10 hours and it looks good and not had any problems , far more polished than oblivion.

and who says PC sales are low ? you i think as nobody else is , theres 190,000 playing it on steam as i type this .

What an original thread. We should probably make a new thread every time someone complains about the PC UI...

It's not a lazy port, it's a great game that's incredibly fun.

What a useful post. Let's make people look stupid when there is an obvious problem that you don't seem to mind.

Does anyone get a mouse pointer in the beginning menu or CC screen? Is there even supposed to be one?

Well you can look at the front page and see 10 more of these exact threads talking about PC issues. This thread is being repeated over and over instead of people with the same issue adding to existing threads. The board is quickly being cluttered with these. So what I suggest, is create one PC complaint topic instead of adding page after page of the same threads. And I certainly would mind if it was happening to me, but I would not create a new thread for each issue.

I dont even understand what people are complaining about with the PC version. The UI is easy enough (I honestly dont understand what people are complaining about other than they are used to certain controls for games and are whining that its not the exact same), and I haven't ran into any glitches.

Don't know if someone told you, but you change the graphical options in the launcher before you hit play...

Wasn't very hard to figure out if you have played Oblivion, or either fallout game. >>;

Uhmm...what about control options? Does the game even have any or is a stupid game pad the only hardware it supports?

As far as I'm concerned the game is a broken piece of console trash. That's ok, I'm sure Bethesds will 'outsource' it to the community to fix.

All of you saying "you can change it in the ini file"

YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE TO! They should be IN THE GAME. I shouldn't have to dig through my install path just to change graphics options that any game is supposed to have. How are you people actually defending this?

Not all the graphics options are in the launcher, the vast majority you have to MANUALLY EDIT FILES to change. And the mouse smoothing? Horrendous.

You can say "I don't mind these things", that's fine, but you cannot, with a straight face, say this was "fantastic" on the PC. This was just a lazy copy and paste from the 360 and we all know it.

There was a time when PC is the lead gaming platform. Now, after playing BF3 and Skyrim, I can conclude that console is the lead gaming platform. I'm not upset or anything since I have no problems switching/adapting but I will never buy another PC game if it has a console equivalent. I have learned my lesson.

Console all the way from now on. Now my problem is whether to buy a PS3 or XBOX...

How hypocritical, calling Bethesda lazy when your too lazy to use the launcher or .ini file to adjust the settings.

Well I for one was extremely excited about this game, I put all my faith in bethesda, aannndd I have to agree with the OP, this is absolute bull ****, it is a complete port, even the loading screen tells you that it is, so yeah I think there should be 50000 threads made on every single forum in the world so that game companies get the freakin message, we know console players will eat whatever you feed them but come on make a quality product for us real gamers (PC gamers)

Yeah, we're not going into the whole console port or not battle because it causes some flamtastic threads and angers a lot of members.

But please do feel free to post any problems you are having in the PC section of H&S so that some of us might be able to help you. :)
