Melee combat is a bit bland

Post » Wed May 09, 2012 3:34 pm

I must admit i'm a bit disapointed with the melee combat.

Theres just no feel of impact. When using a shield it's quite hard to know when you have blocked or not.

In Oblivion you could feel a crunching blow hitting your shield or your armour.

Why does Skyrim feel so bland.Melee combat was one of the things i was looking forward to in this game.

I've only put in about 3 hours playing time so far, but I understand what you mean. In planning my character, I was aiming for a typical spell-sword or battlemage. I find myself more than any other previous Elder Scrolls title an all-out mage. Magicka is awesome now. But melee took a hit; not sure if the controller vibration changes this on the console, but it sure feels weak on PC.

I found the combat much the same as Oblivion, but compared to magic or stealth it's not much fun as those both got a huge upgrade. If you're on PC go Magic and wait for a Deadly reflex mod, on console it's pretty much stealth only.

Wouldn't be awesome if they could throw in the combat of Mount and Blade? I never get sick of trying to lop people's heads off in those games.

Disagree. I find the combat animations to be better than Oblivion. Every time my character blocks with his sheild, the vibration in my controller goes WUMP, much more of an effect than Oblivion provided.

If there's anything I'm disappointed about, it's lack of locational damage, but we've known about this for months now.

Lord. no please.

Huh? Elements of Mount & Blade's combat system could make Skyim's melee combat feel more natural and intuitive.

Thanks for the feedback lads.

I'll persevere with my fighter for my first playthrough as it's my favourite way of playing.

I know mods will probably improve this greatly but i find it disapointing it seems to have gone backwards from Oblivion.

Oh well lol

I have the same problem. I swing my big 2Her annnnd the only way I can tell if I hit the mob is by seeing if it's missing health. That's kinda lame.

I may have to turn the rumble feature on my controller on. I use a two handed axe and barely block because I never know if it actually worked :whistling: .

This is exactly what I was worried about. I noted this many times in the past few months and was always put down by the Beliebers, but it still svcks to get it confirmed. I won't be playing Skyrim until tomorrow, so soon I'll know for sure.

Agreed, the reverse is also true unfortunately.

I'm on PC so i dont use controllers. The Oblivion melee had a much better feel to it without the need for gimmicks like vibrating controllers.

In dungeons for example where you were fighting multiple enemies (ie) bandits you could back up into a corridor and hold your position. In scenarios like that you could almost feel the blows raining down on your shield, metal ringing on metal. In Skyrim it all feels rather flimsy.

I hope you enjoy the game mate, theres a lot of good things i have seen in it in my limited time with it but as far as melee goes it's all a bit flat.

Melee combat has always been pathetic in ES games, it's just as well every other area of the game is perfect or it would begin to grate.

Also it might help that i only ever use magic :P

Dont get me wrong, melee in Oblivion was by no means perfect but given the choice i would have that setup back in a shot in Skyrim.

I think the melee combat is fine.. Not perfect but not bad either but it is definitely much better than Oblivion or Morrowind. Cant expect to pull off fighter game type moves in a game like this.

QUESTION - if you use a controller, does it vibrate when you hit something or when something hits you?

i kind of agree. im REALLY dissapointed you cant parry with a blade anymore once you dual wield.

in es4 you could parry quickly where as with a shield it was slow and heavy. just kind of knocks out the sword play if you cant use your sword defensively.

in es4 you could spell cast and parry and slash as well.

cmon youve got two swords and suddenly you cant block???

They should, at this point M&B is more of an RPG than this is, AND it has better combat. But, you wouldn't be able to get that kind of combat on a console, so they don't.

I think i will have to disagree. I think combat feels more real in skyrim. Especialy compared to oblivian. But everyone is entitled to their opinion.
