How do you obtain spells beyond Novice/Apprentice levels? Is it necessary to continue the main winterhold college quest to get the better spells? I ask because I have to start over if you do.

Anyone know?

I imagine you do. The only merchants I know of with spells otherwise just sell novice/apprentice. And they recommend going to the College.
