How often does vendor's gold count reset? Or does it?

I've returned to Whiterun after several night/day changes and the General Store and the Blacksmith are both still out of money.

They do reset, but it takes a couple days. I think at least 3. Leave the area, go to another city for a few days and come back. It should be reset.
