I started playing skyrim because I believed it looked cool. And sounded beast. Now I am with the imperial dude and whenever I hit him, I get exp for my skills. You can repeatedly hit him and get exp and stuff from him. I find this a useful strategy. If you want him to just focus on attacking you. pickpocket him.
