Unlocking new Spells

Post » Thu May 10, 2012 6:34 am

Do new spells (Adept/Expert/Master) become available on the merchants after leveling the associated skill up, or after doing the Winterhold quest?

How does it work exactly? I've only seen Novice/Apprentice spells thus far and I made it pretty far in the quest.

Im level 23

Thank you! So the main mage quest line (winterhold college) is not necessary to get the best spells?

I ask because I messed up one of the quests and can no longer finish them.

That's what im talking about. The spells available to you seem to be SET by something. All the court mages+ winterhold college mages have the same spells available to me (Only Novice/Apprentice level spells).

I'm asking how do i get the adept/expert/master ones.

Do merchant inventories become updated with the Adept/Expert/Master spells as you increase the associated skill, or after completing so much of the quests in winterhold college?

For example.. once i reach 40 destruction skill, will the merchants start having Adept level spells? Or do i need to do the quests to unlock that tier?

Yeah, me too...it's getting even more difficult for me, because as a battlemage, I'm half-combat oriented, so I can't survive if my spells are weak.

Anyone figured it out?

I'll help out. Mods here don't look kindly on bumping.

Good question. Have you tried looking exclusively for spell tomes?

What does that even mean? Looking where? If you mean the merchants that sell the spells, then yes i've looked there..

Spell tomes....

In random loot. . .

Like the one you find at the beginning.

With 40 hours of gameplay i've seen like 2 tomes drop from 'random' and they were both novice/apprentice. You're not understanding my question.

.... Yes, I am understanding your question. You're not understanding how my (or anyone elses) posts relate to your question.

Your best bet is going to be spell tomes, if no one is selling them to you. 2 drops is a very small number. From memory, from Oblivion, most dungeons had very low drop rates for spell tomes. Mages were more likely to have them.

Secondly, your question was answered in the very first post.

To clarify:

The higher levels of magic become available from merchants once you level your skills up high enough.

I.e. Adept level Conjuration skills become available when Conjuration is at 50.

You can only learn an adept destruction spell from a tome or a merchant when your destruction is at 50.
