arrows dont arch

Post » Thu May 10, 2012 2:55 am

who else does bother this? you can shoot arrows over huge distances straigth forward - the animation is slightly arched, but not really realistic and you dont have to compensate for it when aiming...feels more like a gun...its a detail i know but its kinda annoying me

Yeah I think I've noticed that too. All my shots have been close distance though, so I thought it was just me... Anyone else?

Ah well, better for playability, worse for realism. But trust me - you don't want a realistic arrow flight model in a fantasy game, as much as I enjoy archery in real life ;)

I don't really mind it. I think the bow system feels a lot more solid than ever before, so I'm happy. It did throw me off in the beginning though. I was aiming high and completely missing.

Aim far enough away, and they do arch, just not as much as Oblivion.

I noticed this. I noticed that giants can hit a home run also.

Another thing I noticed is that this game owns as hard as a game can own.

Can I have a fishy stick?

This. I kept aiming like I would in Oblivion at first and kept missing easy shots. Then I just . . . trusted that the arrow would hit where the crosshairs were . . . and success. It feels good and works well, realistic or not.

what he said, i love the way the bow is in this game, i think they did it so u can hit fast flying targets easier, like dragons :D

I always aim above since I play Battlefield and Oblivion, and I was getting extremely frustrated that my shots weren't hitting.... Then I tried shooting directly at the enemy (Witch, in this example) and I hit them. Made little sense to me since it was a pretty significant distance.

feels more like a gun

Guns do this too, actually. Everything is subject to gravity. But you don't tell the game where to aim the bow, you tell it where to shoot the arrow. It's an RPG so it makes sense that a character who is an archer would know how to make it happen for the player who isn't one.

so true. if it was too real you wouldn't hit anything that moved no matter how hard you tried :)

archery requires a lot of investment to get good at it. later on if you haven't got points in it you might as well be kissing baddies to death =p

Well, welcome to the consoles.

That's rubbish. All classic RPGs do this. You have a number that dictates how good your character is in some technique, and player skill is not important. It's pretty much one of the main defining characteristics of RPGs.

not really, i mean you dont have to take the arching into account when aiming, the animation is simply arched a bit and not really realistic - i shot i guy right between the eyes from a distance that i could hardly see him and the arching was minimal...it just feels kinda dum...they could at least make the animation better or include an option for realistic arching

mount and blade for example had a more realistic approach and with some training you hit a lot of stuff even while moving and the target was moving

Loving the game, but really don't like the arrow mechanics. I miss the realism (and yeah, it makes it easier, but if I wanted easy I wouldn't be playing ElderScrolls). I find it breaks the immersive experience completely everytime I shoot (I remember practicing a lot in Oblivion to get good at archery, and that was fun and engaging - a good reason to hunt when you don't really have to for food).

I also find it odd that bodies fall down mountains, wagons tip over and spill their loads all over the place, but arrows defy gravity...

All that said, the modders are gonna have a field day fixing all these things.

Arrows definitely do arch if you are far enough away. A few times I've aimed above a bandits head and it's arched down to hit them. I was quite far away and I was also lower than them (they were standing on top of a tower) which probably helped.

Wrong.You have to compensate , after a certain distance.This happened to me many times.

Discovered this tweak on the RPS forums. It gets rid of the arrows leaping upwards a bit - makes it much more like Oblivion and much easier to aim in my opinion.

Add these two lines to the [Combat] section of Skyrim.ini in Documents\My Games\Skyrim:

f1PArrowTiltUpAngle=0.0
f3PArrowTiltUpAngle=0.0

As an archer I can say this is really close to real life.

You probably feel it isnt because bullets in games like cod drop, but the bulletdrop in those games is ridiculous and extremely exaggerated just to please some people who dont want to have the bullet flying in a straight line.

I was exactly the same, especially as I got pretty good at judging where to aim in Oblivion! Kept missing, but then, like you said, just trusted that it would hit exactly where the dot is.

The arrows definitely drop. And if you just press the fire button so your character doesn't draw the arrow fully taut, they drop after only a few dozen feet.
