A question about showracemenu

Post » Thu May 10, 2012 9:37 am

Hello! I'm new to these forums and have been playing Skyrim since it unlocked this morning :) I was hoping if anyone out there more experienced than I could answer a question for me?

I wanted to change a couple physical attributes of my character, so I used the showracemenu command in the console. I did not change my race at all. The changes I made were purely cosmetic (Body weight and skin tone). These changes have appeared to take, and I haven't really noticed anything wrong with my skills or perks.

Is showracemenu safe to use so long as you don't change your race? Or is my character borked in some invisible way that will only present itself later on? Because I'd rather know now before I get too far in this beautiful masterpiece! :D

Thank you so much!

Following is what I have read about it.

ShowRaceMenu - change your name/race/appearance Changing your race WILL normally reset your stats, unless you follow the following steps:
1.Save your game first, in case things get messed up.

2.Open the race menu

3.Make the desired changes

4.And this is the important part: Press escape, which may or may not show the Save option available. If it does, save the game, then load it with your changes in place, stats unaffected. However, should Save be grayed out, toggle the console on and off, and attempt it again. It will allow you to save, and then load the game, changes in place.

Thanks for the reply! I read that post, but simply wanted to know if there was any danger of stat corruption even if your race remains unchanged.

For the record, I actually went ahead with it and clicked 'accept' rather than doing the 'save then load' trick. (I hadn't discovered that forum post until after I made the changes)

My question still stands, by the way. Is showracemenu safe to use for minor changes as long as you don't change your race? I'd like to clarify just for future reference :)

I haven't tried it in Skyrim yet, but I never had any corruption issues in either Morrowind, or Oblivion.

I've used the trick Ylva describes a few times in OB... Can't recall having any Skill issues when switching races that way....
But you can always save, try switching races and see the results...if something goes wrong you'd be able to reload that save.. right? :)

couldn't get the save trick to work... but I just changed things without touching the race tab, and my stats didn't get reset.

I couldn't get the save trick to work either, but showracemenu doesn't seem to reset your stats in Skyrim like it did in Oblivion. I saved by clicking accept and none of my stats were reset. 4+ hours later everything seems fine.

NOTE -- I did not actually change my race, just made minor cosmetic adjustments.
