Five Disappointing Things About The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Post » Thu May 10, 2012 8:25 am

Watch this idiot reviewer get owned:
http://kotaku.com/5858474/five-disappointing-things-about-the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim

You don't see a "what svcks about call of duty article", because Activision would be [censored] pissed that the money they spent to get good publicity was not giving them good publicity.

Bethesda makes good games (albeit buggy), and thus doesn't need to pay off reviewers. Which you can tell from the actual CRITICISM.

I agree with what Mike Fahey wrote: "If the game were purely a PC monster it would be one thing; a mouse does wonders for directional sword strikes."
Like in TESII Daggerfall, you could swing diagonally from both directions, up and down, thrust forward, slash sideways... It sure would be nice for PC gamers if they made TESVI for PC and then ported it to consoles.
Thanks for that review link, Kane Hart.

1. 3rd person kills

2. the map

3. auto health regen (makes food pretty much useless)

4. clunky melee combat

5. 3rd person kills

1. 3rd person kills

2. the map

3. auto health regen (makes food pretty much useless)

4. clunky melee combat

5. 3rd person kills
6. Horrible textures that looks like they're from a 2003 game.
7. Horrible shadows that a) aren't dynamic B] are very blocky) and c) don't cast shadows on all objects

I don't agree about auto health regen, the map and clunky melee combat though. I like all that to be honest; especially the melee combat.

Ha! I've been playing mage, so I don't have to deal with 3rd-person kill finishers!

I don't know...they are a nice back up if you are running low on potions while dungeon diving. Just shove 30-50 apples and carrots in your mouth. :spotted owl:

2. the map

I have to agree here, I thought ohhhh a 3d map is going to be cool. But because of the clouds and mist rolling around it, I can barely see of the paths to follow. They should have left out the cloud/mist FX and it would have been nicer.

Have to agree on the hair thing. How hard can it be to come up with some decent short hair cuts? Great, we have the bald head, the buzz cut (almost bald), then half bold, half bald with some hair combed across and then the oily mat that looks like the hair got glued to the head. And then the bunch of long hair. No thanks.

One thing, I think is disappointing: the children. Granted, I haven't been to too many towns yet, but it seems like the kids all look the same. ??? Clone Wars or something? Not even beast race children there. (So far.)

Uh, this was done on console for Morrowind on Xbox as well. So not sure why you saying this can only be done on PC. Bethesda just chose not to do it no more. It's one of those "less choices" that the "common gamer" doesn't like to do.

1. You cannot turn off HDR!
2. You cannot turn off HDR!
3. The UI on the PC. Especially the perk trees.
4. The 3D Map.
5. Well I have no fifth point, because 1. and 2. are keeping me from playing. Bethesda needs to fix this. FAST!

The textures are low res, but low res =/= horrible. They do a pretty damn good job of tricking you into thinking they're more detailed than they actually are.

As a console gamer, I would not have a problem with this at all.

Thankfully, my 5 disappoints are pretty much what I thought they would be months ago.

1) Forced 3rd person finishers. That's actually more annoying than I thought it was going to be.

2) UI / inventory. I still prefer the spreadsheet style of viewing lots of stuff at once with the ability to sort. As expected, when encumbered and trying to drop my least valuable heaviest stuff, it takes me 10 times longer than it should.

3) 3D map. Which still isn't a map, and still is a UAV image.

4) HUD. Not as bad as I thought it would be, but I still prefer things not popping up on the screen all the time.

5) The feeling while playing that the PC platform was an afterthought... where, "Don't worry about that, the modders will fix it," was mentioned often in development meetings.

1. how poorly optimised this game is for PC gamers, my gpu is half asleep while running skyrim.. fps drops for no real reason. :/

2. the UI for PC gamers, i'm left handed and remapped all of my keys... try it yourself, it's like fighting the UI as if it were a dragon.

3. Texture work in some places is really .. old school, it's surprising as the effects (snow.. mist.. water) all look really nice.

4. all the children sound american.. seems like alot of effort went into the advlts with there voices but the kids just kinda break all immersion for me.

5. don't have a 5th.. the above 4 are my biggest bugbears.. overall i'm enjoying the game.. the stuff above just sticks out like a sore thumb.

1. 3rd person kills<<<< Don't play in 3rd person

2. the map <<<
3. auto health regen (makes food pretty much useless)<<<< Food has healing properties. The more hitpoints you have themore time it takes to fill up. I'd say that makes food quite useful.

4. clunky melee combat<<< Might have to give you that one.

5. 3rd person kills<<<< See answer No 1.
