Long distance archery very odd

Post » Thu May 10, 2012 10:00 am

I cant put my finger on it but the use of archer at long distance doesn't seem right. When hunting deer for example at a distance it almost seems as if the arrow, while heading strait for the deer, will blink out of existence. Is arrow flight limited by your skill perhaps?

Anyone else find that long distance archery is a little out of whack?

I've had plenty of arrows that look like they're right on target result in absolutely nothing. And I've had no long distance hits to counter that, so... it's possible the distance is limited either by bug or just because.

Indeed. I've used zoom to follow my arrow and I physically see it hit the target. The target doesn't react and no damage happens. Ghost arrow?

PS

I picked a giant to shoot at so yes I'm sure the arrow hit lol.

the arrows seem to move up after being fired and then go down so aim below the head for a headshot

Arrows don't fly in a straight line remember, they will eventually drop off the further they go till they *gasp* hit the ground :)

Aiming at extreme distances I aim above my target a little bit, so they arrow 'drops' into them.. can't say i've noticed any arrows vanishing and such

I started very much the same way, firing a shot from say 50-100ft, pretty confident the shot should hit, alas, nothing, gradually i have figured it out, there is no limit on distance, its just harder to judge, i have hit some really long distance shots, was up on a cliff, pretty damn high up above a bandit camp near Riverwood... Best shot i have achieved so far was Bleak Falls Barrow, before you enter, the first watchtower you come to, fired one pretty much from there to the entrance lol. I think it just takes time getting used to.

I'm pretty sure there is just a ghost arrow bug..because I've made long shots too, but sometimes they just don't hit. Arrow drop isn't the problem, because that's been in every TES game morrowind and on. I'm a seasoned vet thank you. I calculate all that. I'm saying I zoom watch the arrow and literally see the arrow with my eyes hit dead on mark where I want it too, and nothing happens If I go over to inspect the creature and kill it I can even see where the arrow landed on it. It sticks out, but with no damage done to the thing I shot. Bugged. Not often, but it happens. The worst case I had was a necromancer by a standing stone. Shot him 8 times dead on with no hits. I was baffled, so I just magiced him and sure enough the arrows were there just no damage. This has only happened with a mudcrab, the necro, and the giant so far, but it happens.

I found that sometimes, depending on your skill, the arrow may actually rise from where you aim before coming back down! I shot a bandit earlier from probably 50-60M and I found the arrow inbedded right between her eyes even though I was aiming at her chest! Poor gal didn't know what hit her but I did take her gold and arrows :(

Thanks for the confirmation. Hope the bug gets fixed. It thankfully doesn't happen every time, but often enough that it needs fixed.

Are we sure it's a bug or does this just reflect the fact that damage comes from your marksman skill + bow & arrow quality, minus the target's AC and miscellaneous factors. Just landing the shot isn't going to cause damage. Also, the game doesn't really reflect shots to body parts. It doesn't make a difference whether it looks like you shot them in the eye or the foot. That's just a visual display thing.

Doing a little more testing. It seems the bug only happens at certain distances. To far and arrows hit fine, to close the same. I can shoot and do no damage, close in another ten feet and try again and hit. It's quite odd.
