Just trying to figure out if this choice is a moral one.

From what I've seen so far, it's not. I'm not terribly far in, but so far there's a lot of space for interpretation on both ends.

Nope. Neither side is "right" or "wrong". The choice is based on your philosophy about how government should be, such as if it can restrict religious practices, or whether a strong central government or strong local governments are better.
