Killing Spree Pros and Cons?

I'd like to know what the repercussions of going on a killing spree in Skyrim are. Around level 10 I saved and decided to wreak some havoc, essentially wiping out all of the citizens and guards in two different towns. The result was leveling/skilling up incredibly quick, gaining a bunch of great items and, of course, having loads of fun. ;)
By the end my bounty was somewhere around 20k, and I submitted to jail to see what would happen. Upon exiting, I don't think I lost any of the gold/items I'd pillaged.

I'm brand new to Bethesda so I'm curious if there are any unseen consequences to doing this, such as screwing up questlines/ruining reputation with certain people/etc. Since it seems like there probably are, I reset to the original save state when all was said and done, but it was an amazing way to grind. Can anyone shed some light on this?

You could always exterminate the town of an enemy faction.

I've always pondered on about destroying Windhelm because the place is pro Stormcloak....

Killing spree is not suited for Skyrim and is boring in my opinion, that's for GTA-style games where people are not named and unimportant.
In Skyrim, people are important, because they are quest givers and each of them is unique in its own way.

save before you do a killing spree. Reload and repeat. But only do that if your bored because the killing spree thing is more of a fallout type thing. doesn't really work well with TES.
