I was excited at first when they first announced skyrim, watched a few previews which seemed fine. The whole dragon thing seemed like a bit of a novelty when i heard about them. But now playing the game i have been completely blown away how amazing it really is. The visuals are breathtaking despite the odd bad texture up close, the sounds are really nice, the music paces the action nicely, especially in dungeons, adding a wonderful tension. The wirld itself feels massive and actually feels like you are in a large expansive world, whereas oblivion made me feel like i was flying a tiny camera around a very detailed diorama. Mountains tower above you, almost reaching to the stars, with their misty peaks tipped with snow and frost. When you try and conquer a mountain you are covered in the wintery cold and frost like a blanket. The many animals which litter the countryside make the world feel more alive as well. Also, the game doesn't "feel" as scripted as oblivion, even though it is. I think the different choices in how you talk to NPCs and their different resoonses adds to the feeling that you are really interacting with aware and living characters rather than just running through a script.
Then there are the dragons, immense, fear inducing hulks of things which prowl the skies and rain down fury upon you and anyone else that gets in their path. I love when you approach one and see it circling around up ahead, hear their terrifying raws and screaches, and having them speak to you is just so bone shakingly chilling. You can be mid battle with one as it circles you up above, then heads off in another direction only to start taking on a giant and its mammoths. I watch as it rapidly circles the beast raining its frosty havok down upon it, only to be gored to death by the mammoth (i softened it up for it though).
The NPC conversations can be rather absorbing, especially where there are multiple NPCS interacting and discussing things, it seems very natural. The voice acting is for the most part wonderful, with the odd shrill american child or advlt accent in amongst them. I ally like the nordic flavour of the game, it feels very authentic.
The combat is very fluid and enjoyable, and never seems tedious. There are many ways for you to destroy your opponents in any one situation, dual weilding soells is really fun, and shouts add that extra bit of destruction when you need it. I ends up leaving you feeling powerful yet not overpowered, which is nice.
It has more of a serious feel to it compared to oblivion, which seemed comical at times, almost making fun of itself. I feel like i am inside a fantasy novel with rich history reaching back many toiusands of years, and the way references are made to the story of oblivion and its history and lore adds to this feeling like you are just a small speck in this worlds history.
I have only been playing for a day or so, and am already level 11, so im hoping levelling will become slower as i proceed. I feel like i have barely scratched the surface of the side quests and plan to really get lost in them and break up the main quest a bit.
Overall, i cant speak more highly of this game, it has blown me away and exceeded my expectations so far, and i hope it continues to do so.
