So what is the consensus for best starting class to play a pure mage? Brenton or Altmer?

Breton for power and survival in a balanced way. Altmer is simply more powerful but weak on defense. It really doesnt make much of a difference who you play.

Altmer isn't really weak on defense. Sure the Breton's racials are more defensive, but as Altmer, I found the highborn power has great defensive applications.

Pop Highborn and then cast as much healing as you need, be certain your Ward wont fail for a whole minute, etc.

Id say theres little contest. Altmer is top dog. Maybe if they hadnt nerfed Bretons so bad it would be another story. (Splash screens still talk about them having 50% MR so cutting it by half was a last minute thing)

Altmer makes a better offensive mage while Breton makes a better defensive mage.

Altmer imo.

Yup, Altmer. That's my next character choice. Playing a mutt currently.
