So do I have this right?

So I will preface this by saying I do love the game so far. Long time tes player.

I like the customizing nature of the perk system. I do see one issue emerging if I'm seeing it right. I'm leveling my smithing as a money maker, but I'm not perking it because i need the points for my "main" thief skills.

So if I never perk smithing then I'll be making crappy leather armor forever? I'll have no use for the other metals I pick up other than as vendor fodder?

Seems like a short fall of the perk system if I can level lock picking to 100 and not be able to open higher locks easier without perks. Or 100 level alchamy still making crap potions because of perks that I think should be more of a bonus than a pre req.

Am I right in how the perks are shaking out to work and how do you guys feel?

I compleatly agree, I'm afraid of using my perks at all let alone on non combat skills. It would be nice to have the ability to reasign perks... for a price ofcourse.

To be honest I've been using the console to add perks I don't feel are worthy of wasting a point on. Speech/smithing etc.

It would have been nice if you could just get trained by different blacksmiths in the game, instead of using perks.

I think the smithing perks are bad to be honest. I think that as you level smithing you should be able to make better armour (with dragon at 100), and I think the perks should be such as needing less resources etc.

According to UESP wiki, the perks make it so you can improve a armour item a few levels lower than non-perk, if you understand me?

From what i see there are 5 stages of weapon/armour quality from *fine* to the best quality *legendary*. suggest googling it to see what im talking about as im not sure if i am allowed to link to a fansite.

Eh. I think it's silly to assume that every character has to be "perked out" as a total combat monster. If you can't spare a few Perks for noncombat skills and survive, you're doing something wrong in my opinion. I'm just starting out, though, so I could be wrong.

im only level 7, i have not used any perk's yet :P

*SPOILER*

From what i have read you can potentially get 100/250 or so possible perks, 80 via leveling, 20 via rewards (quests etc), cant say for sure personally.

I'm a bit worried about the number of perk points as well ... I'm playing on 360, so I can't add them in console (not that I would right now ... Jesus, we're only three days since release!), but having put three in Archery and one in Alchemy so far I have some stored up that I'm just too nervous to spend right now. Deus Ex: Human Revolution went to the opposite extreme: you just get more points than you could sensibly need. But in Skyrim I've got a feeling that there will be not enough points to get essential combat perks and also to put points in side trees.

It makes for replayability I suppose ...

Thanks for the feed back guys. Nice to not feel crazy. Just hate the feeling of watching skills increase for no gains.
