PC impressions?

After most have played Skyrim, how is it for the PC?

-Controls
-Optimization
-Graphics(will DX 11 make it better or is it minimal)
-Value for the price

I am holding off just a bit here once they get all patches out and fix the problems.I don't want to get any game breaking bugs on my first hour.

about the bugs: they're many. very many. but those ive seen havent been gamebreaking at all. except for a random crash every now and then, most of the bugs ive seen are texturebased, and are fixed easy by saving and loading

controls: i love them (except UI... quite awkward and takes some getting used to)
Optimization: im getting slight stutter at times but i dont know if its a driver problem, an SSD problem, or a skyrim problem
Graphics: good graphics but i dont think there is any dx11 features. Some textures are quite low quality but there will be a fan made texture pack later no doubt.
value: worth every penny.

UI and controls aren't the best, but aren't as OMG TERRIBLE as people make it out to be. Either you like them and get used to them, or you use an Xbox 360 controller.
Optimisation is a lot better than previous Bethesda games, still not the greatest, but a lot better. I get between 30-50fps in most places, which for a game this CPU intensive is pretty good.
Graphics are amazing. Textures are a bit low res if you shove your face in them, but playing normally the game looks stunning. Still only uses DX9 though.
Value for money? This thing is worth x100 times the asking price.

I've played for about 16 hours so far and I've not encountered one bug. Only 4 crashes.

You don't have to have crashes, it all depends on the system you have... I've had no crashes at all and I must have been playing at least 20 hours so far.

IMO the controls are awfully clunky, and the UI is absolutely atrocious, but overall it is a big improvement from previous games.

...Now if only we could convince Todd and Co. to quit treating us pc users like the unwanted step child.

- there's been numerous posts regarding controls, but i think this is a good summing up: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1260178-feedback-on-the-ui-and-game-menu-system/
- optimisation seems varied (hard related i suppose). me personally, i have a game that's only crashed once in a weekend full of playing (and only cos i alt-tabbed), loads incredibly fast, no discernable lags at all, and even on full settings my PC runs at a much lower temperature than when I'm running older games like TF2 or just cause 2. - there is a really buggy issue with sounds though, they're too quiet even on max sound settings, and you need to change your windows sound quality to 441000Hz if it's higher than that or sounds bug out.
- i'm not aware of it using DX11, as far as i can tell it's DX10. nonetheless i feel it looks pretty good. if you have an ATI card though disable skyrim's AA and anistopic filtering and use the GPU's own ones or you'll get graphical bugs on some textures
- well since i got it for near to 60% the price on steam due to pre-ordering it on amazon i'd say i got good value for money. i paid £25 for what i consider to be a £25 game (but then again i won't play a game that i can get for less than £30). it's a good game, but one that's having some serious teething trouble which can basically be put down to lack of adequate testing.

I think the Low res is necessary because a game of this size is not possible on all high and DX11.It will literally break your computer in half :)

I just think consoles actually helped people to not buy the best hardware available, but to get more to play.Works either way for me.

-Controls 6.5/10 (you get used to it tho)
-Optimization 8/10 (fps is a crazy roller coaster for many ppl even w/high end rigs - tho it still runs smooth for me at least. I don't expect constant 60fps but the variation is quite wild)
-Graphics 9/10 (on Ultra...and considering the engine....)
-Value for the price 10/10

I've had no CTD's or crashes of any sort and no serious bugs/glitches. There's the usual bit of clipping into terrain/items, some objects not placed quite properly so you can see their empty edges, and so on, but nothing major for me yet.

UI has a hotkey issue for many, since it often assigns two tasks to the same key ("F" for example), and if you remap certain functions to new keys (PoV from F to H, for example), the game UI will not change the key graphic for the 2nd function to match, which causes confusion. (it'll still say press "F" to Favorite instead of "H"). So that's a bad design or bug or something.

Melee combat (the "feel" of it), imo, still svcks tho. It's usable/works, don't get me wrong....but I still don't like it.

-Controls

They aren't too bad. Navigating the menus is a breeze using the WASD keys. Shortcuts to the inventory, magic menu, map, and skill menu can all be bound to any key, so you don't have to go into that radial menu thing at all if you don't want to. The mouse pointer is a little finicky at times, but works for the most part. You can still have stuff hotkeyed on 1-8.

-Optimization

Pretty terrible. The shadows are rendered in the CPU, so they look like crap and cause a massive performance hit unless you have a pretty beefy processor. The game only uses 50% of my 6950 in areas where I only get 25-30fps (Whiterun, Riverwood), but uses up to 80% in less intensive areas.

-Graphics(will DX 11 make it better or is it minimal)

Eh, doesn't look too much better than Fallout 3, sorry to say. The art style makes up for this, however.

-Value for the price

Come on, this is an Elder Scrolls game. It's worth every penny.

Controls: Takes a bit getting used to, and there's some restrictions/iffy bits here or there. After you get accustomed to it though, you'll fly through the menu screens fast enough.
Optimization: Great. I have two 4870s, one of which is off due to Crossfire issues, and I'm handling the game like no tomorrow with no hiccups.
Graphics: Amazing for a DX9 game. DX11 will net you some extra performance, and you'll likely max the game out with ini tweaks to boot.
Value: I'm already 27 hours in and enjoying every minute, and foresee hundreds of hours more. Go get it.

EDIT: I've had about 4 crashes in my 27 hours. The game saves pretty often though so you shouldn't have a problem with it.

Biggest "problem" is that the game is built around console play and not for PC play and so everything about the menus and UI are made to run with a controller, Heck if you go to the option menu it has xbox controller turned on by default.................... what else do you need to say after that.

Yes the game is playable on a PC and yes it will take you time to get used to playing it because your using a keyboard and mouse and everything about the game controls is made to run with a controller not keyboard and mouse. If you were to look at the PC version and xbox or ps3 version side by side you would see absolutely no difference in the menus or UI. This is a massive slap in the face to PC users because being a role playing game with lots of commands it has been overly simplified to run on a controller with very limited buttons where as a PC user uses a mouse and keyboard with almost limitless keys and the mouse is extremely precise and super fast aiming tool not like the joystick on a game controller which needs a massive dead zone to allow players to even hit a targeted object. A person using a mouse can hit any point on the screen in less then a second no matter how small it was where a joypad on a controller would take 3 or even more and a long time fine tuning the pointer to hit the exact spot.

This is my only real gripe about the game its just built ground up to be played on a console using a controller something they should have mentioned to PC users who expected a game that was built around using a keyboard and mouse for control. Like I said its not game breaking as the game can be played as is on a PC it will just take a while to get used to and that all the game pauses while your scrolling through endless menu options to find the right command to click when since your on a keyboard you should have just had to tap a key not scroll through anything. The PC version is just the xbox version that runs under windows and that is a crying shame.

The graphics are excellent very very nice on max setting but even this was obviously optimized to run on tv's and not computer screens which are way higher resolutions.

Its still a good game but will have lots of little bugs and strange things because its such an open game you can do anything so its hard to fix bugs for things you might never do but somebody else does.

Game looks and runs amazing, maxed out except for shadows and I get 60fps everywhere on a 3 year old computer. Mouse controls took some tweaking and trial and error to get right, but that's nothing new for a Bethesda game. UI is great as long as you use WASD for it, the mouse is horrible in the menus.
