Whiterun. You have to do some of the main quest, and it costs 5k for said house, but well worth it due to having a place to sleep and store stuff.

That as far as i know that is the cheapest one you can really own.

If you need a house theirs a witch north of Riverwood you can kill and just drop stuff in the house, I don't know if the containers are safe.

If you join the mage's college in Winterhold you'll get a free room with storage, furnished.

Can anyone with a guide, tell us where you can get a house, and the requirements of it? I don't like Whiterun, but I don't know if there's even a house you can get in Solitude?

From a quick look at the wiki, it looks like there are houses you can buy in the five major cities, although I believe the Whiterun one is the cheapest.

And yeah, the College gives you a free room, and I think I've read those containers are safe, but I can't personally vouch for that. No clue it the other guilds have something similar.

I already had the most expensive manor in the queens city up north. You have to first complete a quest for here to take the horn to the statue of Talos then you can buy it for I think 20,000 (hard hit on hard earned money).

I'm working on buying one in Markarth, haven't seen the house yet (just completed the quest that'll let me buy) but I love the city.

Solitude? My good sir, could you go into any more detail than that? I love that city, I've been saving up since I started playing (at 36K now) hoping I could get a house there. I never found out one way or another, so I just kept saving.

How did you get that quest? Is it a chain? Rumor?

I really wish there were more houses to choose from.

Time to add that to the list of DLC...

Markarth one is good, and even comes with a armour stand and display cases. Also has alchemy table and enchanting table.

Just join the thieves guild and do their quests.

you can steal everything you come across on their quests and sell it to the fence in the thieves guild.

that will allow you to have infinite income.

After you beat the College at Whitehold you get the Arch-mage's quarters. So just use that.

In Solitude, you must complete a couple quests for the Jarl and her steward. After that, she gives you permission to buy a manor. It is 25,000 gold.
