I feel like the reason why Skyrim was so successful was because they took everything that was great about Oblivion and combined it with everything that was great about Fallout 3. The result is amazing.

For example, the executions, which were absent in Oblivion, but existed in Fallout 3. Everytime I see an execution scene I think back to Fallout.

They take cues from both games yes, but I feel like Skyrim is it's own game. Not oblivion+Fallout 3

Well yes, obviously. I didn't mean it as a combination, I meant it as taking the best features from both games and making them features in a new game.
