Do you ever get used to playing with a controller?

Post » Thu May 10, 2012 2:15 pm

I am a HUGE PC gamer, so I have skyrim for PC naturally but I thought id switch it up and use a gamepad for skyrim, its really hard to get use to, but its not skyrims fault, its hard for me to get use to fps and gamepads... I really want to use a gamepad for skyrim though, how long do they take getting use to?

It should only take a couple of hours, max. It's fairly intuitive with a controller.

It really depends on what you mean by "how long do they take getting use to?". If you mean to just get the controls down then it shouldn't take longer than an hour. In my opinion though you will never be as good as you were using a keyboard and mouse. At least I never will be.

Skyrim was made for the controller. Even on the PC, keyboard and mouse was an afterthought and no where near as well implemented.

If you cant, or refuse to play Skyrim with a controller, you are missing out on the real experience. Its easy peasy to learn, and yes movement and targetting with the thumbsticks is perfect.

On the contrary I find it impossible to game with a mouse and keyboard. I want to focus on the game not look down and see which key to hit next and not to mention movement itself is overly complicated on the PC. How am I suppose to attack and move if one hand is on the arrow buttons and the other using the mouse? Plus hearing the clicking sound of the mouse is damn annoying.

I was the same way when I played my first PC game. I almost gave up but my friend kept telling me how awesome it was. So happy I never gave up, gamepads seem so awkward now. Those Xbox controllers just scare the crap out of me. PS2 was the last console I had.

I grew up with elders scrolls on the pad, so Morrowind (xbox) Oblivion (360). I bought Skyrim for the PC so I could download mods, I just hope mods are also compatible with the controller

It depends. I think for Skyrim it shouldn't be too long, a few hours maybe.
I used to play only on the PC, but about a year ago my frustration with PC crashes (I'm cursed that way) led me to buy a PS3. I love both FPS and RPG games and the FPS games were the biggest challenge to adapt to with the controller. It was made even worse because I used Killzone 2 as my first ever PS3 game. Now, after about a year's worth of (casual) gaming, I'm loving the controller. The experience of sitting back and enjoying a game, rather than sitting hunched over a keyboard and mouse is so much more fun for me. I've got only a few hours in Skyrim so far (about 10) and the controller works very nicely. Take care to customize the controls. I have found I use some buttons intuitively for certain actions such as spells, pushing the wrong button has gotten be killed a few times.
