Why are finishing moves so "laggy"?

Post » Fri May 11, 2012 2:06 am

So I noticed that the finishing moves are really laggy, as in, my axe often doesnt connect with the enemy, hes moving while he has an axe in his neck, I stab the air next to them, stuff like that. Im sure you know what I mean. (if you dont have it and its a problem only I have please tell me :o )

My question is, why? Its a singleplayer game, it should be easy to play an animation with both the enemy and the player synchronized. It just doesnt look good when I stab someone and the sword is moving while it sticks out of his back.

I've read other people having similar issue's - especially those who tend to play in 1st person all the time. Personally I tend to play and fight in 3rd person with swords and have not noticed any issue's with the finishers when they play - I've seen finishers for 2-handed sword, 2-handed hammer, mace & sword.. on both human and animal (wolves) enemies.

Do you play/fight mostly in 1st or 3rd person? I'm wondering if the "lag" is caused by the switching from 1st person to 3rd person to show the finishing move...

I always fight in 1st person, though I explore in 3rd person.

All the moves lag, but 1st person moves not as much as the 3rd person moves. So thats actually a good thought you had there.

LOL no it isn't just you. They're very slow for me too. Earlier in Bleak Falls Barrow, my mace seemed to just stop and hover in front of a dreugh's face for a few seconds before it finally fell to the ground and I got control back.

BTW I'm playing on xbox 360 (my PC can't handle Skyrim) - so I don't know if this is happening only on xbox or the other platforms as well?

Also I play exclusively in first person, so you may be onto something. It could be caused by having to change the POV..augh.

I'm wondering what determines when the animation happens in 1st person or 3rd person.

I've had two 1st person finisher animations, but the rest have been in 3rd person. I'd say about 5 of them. I only fight in 1st person, btw.

And I wish there was a stat that tracked finishers.

I'm playing on PC, so its probably safe to assume all platforms have this issue.

yeah some are laggy others just glitch and your left woundering what bruce lee move you just pulled, others are just [censored], picking up the wolf my the throat and stabing it is fine but the same cant be said when ur holding an axe or mace you jab it with the handle, take that i rub you with my shaft... :/

Today I killed a dragon with a onehanded weapon, maybe you know what it looks like when the finishing move kicks in.

I was floating in the air right next to his head and was hacking away at nothing. Horrible.

I love them, but they are so twitchy and totally wrong 90% of the time! I've never seen a perfect finishing move, either the free hand disappears inside the other person and you see the sword sticking out through in an odd angle. Then when you finish a wolf in 1st person, you basically smash the air and the wolf bounces like a rock to the ground. I like them, I always feel like a baws when I make one, but they are so badly done. :celebration:

I also think it's the transition from first person to third person that causes that "slow" up of the action.

For what it's worth I've seen it work much better using a sword than an axe or mace.

That is exactly what I mean.

It should really not be hard to make them look good when its a singleplayer game. I mean even tf2 manages to synchronize animations (the high five taunt for an example) and thats online.

Also for the POV-switch-theory, is there a way to disable third person finishing moves?

It's a Bethesda game. They're not exactly the kings of animations... (at all)

still, look at the link I added in the OP.
I saw stuff like that in a few online games, but NEVER EVER EVER saw soomething like that in a SINGLEPLAYER GAME.
