Where the 810 comes from

Post » Thu May 10, 2012 7:49 pm

>Go to metacritic
>Spot lowest review (80)
>Go to a french game site
>Read the review

Just in case you wonder where this lonely 8 comes from in the middle of all the 9.5′s and 10s: well...

They say that it would be futile to expect "the holy grail of rpg′s" or "the genre to be re-invented" and stated the following as the negative reasons for that:
>Bugs
>Low graphics
>Combat

...They played the Beta. On a Xbox.

How do those people even call themselves reviewers?

The exact same magazine by the way gave a solid 6/10 to http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/xbox-live-arcade-roundup_7?page=2

Not enough yet? They gave a 4.7 to Legend of Zelda: Faces of Evil.
Yes, THE "Faces of Evil".

I'd give this game an 8, it's a good score as far as I'm concerned.

Are bad graphics, heaps of bugs and clunky combat not grounds to take away 2 points from the 10? I think 8/10's a great rating especially coming from metacritic. I'm not sure if you're complaining about this or not.

Well they could play the released version on PC and come to the same conclusion as it currently stands. http://www.gamasutra.com/blogs/EricSchwarz/20111111/8866/Skyrim_or_How_Not_to_Make_a_PC_Game.php.

8/10 is a very good score I'd say, very forgiving.

I think review scores are being inflated overall, a 5/10 should indicate an average game, (A game has to be pretty darn awful to get a 5/10 these days).

a part of the problem is that publishers are pressuring reviewers into giving good reviews (If a reviewer gives a bad review he can pretty much forget about getting early access to future titles)

Skyrim is definitly a 8/10 on the PC right now (Losing points primarily due to bugs, poor UI, DRM, and low res textures), With all those things fixed it might deserve a 9/10 or maybe 92-93% on a 100% scale. (Ofcourse pretty much all games that get 9/10 or 10/10 scores are being overrated. (10/10 should only be given to perfect games, and thus far i havn't played a single perfect game, everything has flaws)

That's funny because I'm seeing none of those.

Isn't the most important thing that YOU like the game? Who cares what other people think.

Why are you on the forum complaining that 1 out of 100 Skyrim reviews has a great score instead of a perfect score.

Just play the game and quit your [censored]ing, PLEASE...

Im confused how MW3 got 88. Its just a map pack for MW1. Why people buy that game i will never know, battlefield series is so much better.

I second that Diastro, who gives a crap that some french moron gave it an 8? If you bought it and don't like it return it, shut the f up and get on with life. I love it, my brother-in-law who hates rpgs is into it and that is all i need to have already voted this game of the year, witch btw battlefield and mw3 are not even up for so go b**** some where else and learn that there will never be a PERFECT game if it is made by IMPERFECT humand beings. Enough said

I'm inclined to agree 8/10, great gameplay buried under a heap of visual instability and the occasional crash or bug.

When mainstream sites like Gamespy and IGN give a AAA title 10s and 9.5s you should always deduct a couple points to get the real score. I like Skyrim well enough but I also think that this is a fair review with some valid points.

Can you link the review please, I'm having a hard time finding it on metacritics (when I type "skyrim" it only shows 3 results).

I'm french myself, so I'm interested in this review, but the biggest and most listened-to french website (jeuxvideo.com) gave the game 9/10.

Oh I think I found it: it must be on gamekult, which is the second biggest site, and has a reputation of being elitist. For exemple if a game is starting to get too much fame before launch they'll crush it to "balance" things.
It's a pretty common thing we do in France concerning american cultural stuff. You should have seen theatrical reviews of Avatar at launch :D So don't bother too much, the rating is "cultural" and french-oriented :)

I give it an 8/10 myself.
First of all because to get a 10/10 it would have to be superhumanly good.
I dont know why so many reviewers like to slap 10's around, it devalues the whole meaning of maximum score when a game such as this gets a 10/10.
Because it simply is not.

First of all there are the bugs and glitches.
Annoying, sometimes quest- or even game-breaking.

Then there is the terrible UI.
The quest log is very summier. Mono syllabic. Often with a lot of quests active you dont know what is what anymore.
There is no way to tell what factions you are in, what rank you have in any faction, what reputation you have in any hold.
In an RPG this is simply unforgivable.

Then there is the comparison with other installments in the series.
Another point gets substracted for how lame and generic the magic has become, especially coming from a series which made its name and fortune in a large part due to their intricate and customisable magic system.
There now is no difference with 1000 other games and to top it all off it is poorly balanced towards high levels and/ or high difficulty.

I would only give a 10/10 if the game was flawless, because that is what a perfect score means.

8/10 seems right to me.
And its a very good score, mind you.

Atm a score of 8/10 for the PC version is a over rating imho. The PC version has flaws which make the game troublesome to play even post patch. As a reviewer myself I seriously wondering whether the 9/10 scores that appeared on some supposibly PC orientated websites were because thay actually reviewed the xbox360 version or that they didn't actualy play the thing for very long

The PC-Version may be flawed-but to such a less extend that you can fix EVERYTHING by yourself.
Day 1 patch, a few minor tweaks on the .ini and some changes in the graphics menu-bam.

That's simply not true. My 8/10 game is currently the result of hundreds of people poring over thousands of different configuration settings on these forums and elsewhere. I've spent hours configuring this game.
