SPOILER ALERT

Ive been stuck on this darn quest for sometime now. I need to find a way to release Thorald from Thalmor custody without killing anyone. A solution i though of was joining the imperials. I did. And i just completed their faction, I talked to the general again and he wont release him.
Is there ANY way of doing it without either sneaking or killing.
