Steam has ~218,000 people playing Skyrim

Post » Fri May 11, 2012 5:42 am

That's a lot of PC players at one time - wonder what the total digital sales were, because I can't imagine that even half the people who bought the (pc) game are all playing at the exact same time

# going up , now ~ 221,000 http://store.steampowered.com/stats/

edit : apparently Steam is choking on Skyrim - I see a lot of posts about problems installing from Steam

Yeah It's a shame digital purchases still can't be counted. Makes the PC industry look way smaller than it is.

Well, as I told other people here (Dragonborn1), the "consoles are 90% of our audience" comment by Todd was obviously purely false nonsensical bee-ess. PC sales are probably about equal to each console's sales.

There is already an update that fixes these -- the mouse now works in the menus for selecting things like it should so you might want to retry !

Total PC sales almost surely exceed PS3 sales, but XBOX unit volume is 3X PS3

BUT : profit dollars may come mostly from PC version!!!! Depends on volume of digital sales https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0At9e86IO-Ap3dDJmMVNKWUpqNTlsd2hIM2ZXUDVFYVE&hl=en_US#gid=0

I especially like the quote "it’s probably also a record number of people concurrently falling to their knees, gazing up into the falling rain, and cursing a single interface designer’s name. "

lol, that article says it is beating MW3, but MW3 isn't really played on the PC. I don't think you can make that claim when there are 1,000,000 players playing MW3 on the console :)

Still, amazing stats for a single player game.

90% might be a high estimate, I would guess 75%, 3/4 area.

I seem to recall just pre-orders for 360 and PS3 being over 1,800,000 just in the US...

Consoles just over 1,630,000, PC ~ 223,000 without counting digital download versions http://www.vgchartz.com/preorders.php. DD estimated to be 1.5 to 2.0 X retail

That was years ago after Oblivion came out. However, after Skyrim was announced, Todd also ate humble pie and acknowledged that Beth's games need mods to truly appreciate and stated that the company was fully aware of and supportive of modding on PC (and that they were strongly pushing consoles to allow such activity, too, but no luck yet). At the same time, he also stated that their sales were about even between PC and consoles (this is probably because many people own multiple copies).

Is it so hard to believe Skyrim could out-sell MW3? MW3 is based almost purely from the hype of the other games, and is basicly just a new map pack. I don't believe the whole CoD community is so unaware of that.

Keep in mind that many people that have the game now did not pre-order. For example, they may have just gone to a store and bought it. So I see no problem with the numbers.

That chart's crazy confusing D: From what I've gathered, Skyrim's made 93 mil so far?

And that doesn't even count players like myself who keeps Steam running in offline mode.

MW3 has made more money first-day than any other entertainment/media/whatever release in history. $400 million.

That's a LOT of unaware people. http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/121/1212246p1.html

Anyways, I don't wanna live in a world where the second re-release of CoD 4 is dominating sales, so I'm gonna jump into some Skyrim right now.

I've been keeping track...it's exciting to see how popular it is and how STUPID MW3 is. Hope Bethesda responds with patches and content galore!

that's my guesstimate - lots of factors are guessed at : Gross Profit %, license fees, total sales (vs pre-orders)
