Light armour is quicker, while heavy armour provides more protection.

honestly,
I tried playing a light armor barbarian type sword and board on master. it was simply too hard.
Switched to heavy armor and now its alot easier. what you decide on depends alot on the difficulty you plan on playing on.
on easy im sure anything will work.

light armor perks get some good defense perks and it gives you increase stamina regen which means more power attacks which means more damage which means non-stop murder conveyor belt.
