It doesn't really matter ... TES is about being whatever you want, without giving you any limitations. They are all equal, you can choose any race, and be whatever you want. You are new to TES and what matters the most is that you gotta go on your own and do whatever you want, and explore a bit until you learn everything :))

I like Dark Elves, they are very well rounded and the fire resistance is nice when fighting dragons. Also, their racial ability is good if you find yourself overwhelmed numerically. Stat bonus wise, they're pretty well rounded but seem to be geared toward a thief-mage hybrid. Oh, and they look bad ass.

If you're new, playing a Breton might make it noticeably easier--due to their 50% magicka resistance.

For a complete noob? Nord/Orc/Imperial/RedGuard - Warrior. If you like Mages choose High Elf or Breton. If you like Ranger/Bard/Assassin/Archer/Thiefs then choose Argonian, Khajit, or Wood Elf. For mixed classes use anything you want.

idk best character for a noob in my opinion is either a nord or dunmer. just because of the 50% frost and fire resistance respectively. Makes it easy when fighting dragons if their fire or frost breath barely hurts you. Nord is probably better though since there are other creatures that use frost magic i.e. wisp mother and ice wraith

That's the beauty of Elder Scrolls games. There really isn't a massive distinction to the races and skills. You'll have just as much fun picking one at random and then just using the skills you want to use whenever you want to use them.

Can't decide which skill to use? Then use all of them. You won't get punished, and you'll gradually gravitate to the ones you like best. The game is so open in that way it seems a shame to box you in with race and skill suggestions.

Play what you want.
But if you want an all-around experience, then head for a Dunmer or Argonian. They have many good stats, and they
have skill boosts in almost every category. Also they have so good racial abilities/bonuses.
But you should just do what you want! :D

Cool :) cheers for the feedback guys. From what everyone has said I'm just gonna wing it and see what happens :)

Am a dark elf as they looked the coolest and I figured that you get new spells all the time where as with a sword I expect it might get a bit repetitive after a while.

At the start of the game is the magic a little weak as I seem much stronger with a 2 handed sword at the moment.

Does anyone that uses magic also use a shield for blocking?

Am thinking of also training up with a bow as well.

Do you think if you dont focus on one or two main skills you wont be powerfu enough as the game progresses?

Sorry for all the questions, cheers :)

I am a noob and I picked Red Guard. He does great in most situations. He is pretty much a Battlemage or whatever. His weapons are enchanted and his shields block certain elements.

Works out pretty great.

What do you think looks the coolest? Be that. The differences between races are so minor that it doesn't really matter. There are certain archetypes the races utilize in the game and lore but ultimately it's up to you to pick whatever you want, they'll be just as successful!
