Im convinced there is only one model for a child

Post » Fri May 11, 2012 11:12 am

So I went out and discovered some extra towns today. I kid you not, the EXACT same child model was in 3 of the cities I found. If I saw a child and it was a boy it was the same damn model every time. Whats up with that? Does anyone else feel like that's really svcky? I've been pretty fortunate with few bugs (IMO anyway) but this one totally killed the immersion for me. Same model, same voice, just a different name. Thought this was really lame. Anyone else notice?

1. If you look at kids in real life, you'll notice that they pretty much all look similar until they hit 10.

2. Good voice actors are expensive and hard to find. Good child voice actors (or women who can do male children, though it doesn't sound like that happened here) are even harder to come by.

3. I've seen different-looking kids, but just like with the advlts, some people are going to be doppelgangers.

I extracted some of the meshes out of the game just so I could see the structure compared to Oblivion, and I discovered that there are Redgaurd children too.

all of the ones ive seen are similar, but i have yet to see them all.

but inreality, kids are purely astetic and don't really serve any further point than filling an awkard gap people tend to complain about in previous TES games that it was odd there were no children.

I disagree with point 1. Kids look as different in real life from each other as advlts do.

I agree with the OP. Every kid I've seen is a clone. LITERALLY. Only one little girl had blond hair instead of brown, but her face was identical to every other female child. I thought the Jarl only had 2 kids until I saw all three of them at once.

How hard would it have been to make the kids have feature sliders like the advlts? Different colored hair at least? It's like the design team copy and pasted the same child NPC every time they needed one. It's a shame, because otherwise all the children have unique personalities, but the Children of the Corn syndrome IS harmful to immersion and smacks of laziness.

This isn't Bethesda's first go round with children either! The kids in Fallout 3 all looked different. Why the clone syndrome in Skyrim?

It isn't helped by the fact that children only seem to have one outfit. Or two, if you count the fact that the female children wear dresses. Good thing too, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to tell them from the boys.

It all just seems jarring, especially in comparison to how carefully crafted and detailed the rest of the game is . . . .

I agree - the children should have been more varied. Given how much detail there is in the rest of the game, this particular aspect sticks out like a sore thumb.

I've barely seen many beastfolk advlts in my playthrough, let alone beast children. I've seen maybe 2 Argonians and the College Khajiit but thats it so far. Most everyone in towns are Nord and I assume for now that all the children are Nords.

Right, what white rabbit was saying, it's not that they look similar it's the exact same model. I definitely don't agree that children look the same especially not like twins. I'm not trying to rag on bethesda about voice actors, re-use the same voice if you have to. I never said I had a problem with the voice. It's that I went into 3 cities back to back to back and they ALL had the same exact model WITH the same exact voice - very distracting.

All I'm saying is I agree with Rianne - it just sticks out like a sore thumb.

I am *not* trying to say the game svcks and I'm *not* trying to flame on bethesda - I've been playing since morrowind, it's just that this is one aspect that seems so odd with how detailed everything else is. Think they could add more models later to "fix" it? Is that type of thing "moddable"?

Edit: I haven't seen any beast children yet, but that would be super sweet. A child argonian would look awesome IMO.

The beastfolk are definently underrepresented, orcs too.
I do like the fact it makes Skyrim really seem like an isolated province (which Morrowind failed to do)

I really feel like the kids in this game were a last minute "why not?" They don't even have the same accent as their parents.

I should state that it's a good idea, it's just so poorly implemented that I think you'd almost be better off without? Maybe the next one they can get more models - that would be sweet.

The children AREN'T poorly implemented. Almost all of them have unique personalities, games they play, activities they do, they go to work with their parents sometimes, they hold conversations, etc. A lot of children are even heavily involved in certain quests. Some children are quest givers with unique animations! It just boggles the mind that Bethesda just reused the same model over and over again for all of them. Especially since Bethesda did a great job with the children in Fallout 3, giving them different looks, hair, and clothing from each other.

Who ever was in charge of making the child models dropped the ball. It looks good, but why shouldn't it?! It's the only one they seemed to have bothered to make!

Beast children are a no-show so far, but I haven't even begun to visit all areas of the map, even after 30+ hours.

Hang on, so now you're going to argue with me that the *models* used aren't part of the *implementation* of the children? I whole heartedly disagree. The whole rest of your post I'm not disagreeing with, nor did I ever. Looks like we'll have to agree to disagree whether the models used qualify as part of the implementation of an idea in a game. The actual point you make in your post I don't disagree with.

Weren't it for the two different clothes and haircuts, you wouldn't even be able to tell which are the boys and the girls as it's (almost?) the same face for all of them. How lazy can you be? And no, children in real life do not look the same. Do not confuse shared features (kindchenschema ect.) with actual likeness.
