Why did Bethesda drop the ball on Dual Wielding and Staves?

Post » Fri May 11, 2012 10:47 am

If its something that affects the entire experience why is it nitpicking?

We were promised a PC friendly UI.

Its like promising someone a Harley custom made for you, and instead getting a generic razor scooter.

*high five for anologies.

No it's like requesting a Harley custom and the instrument panel isn't quite how you wanted it. I'll grant you the UI issues have some valid points; it doesn't make the game go from amazing to horrible though. Plus...once the construction kit is out I guarantee you'll see a dozen UI mods in a couple weeks.

World design, physics, quests, sound, these are all made by completely separate teams, so there is no excuse for whoever designed the mechanics to have dropped the ball so far.

You use the term "dropped the ball" a lot. I don't think it means what you think it means. But then hyperbole on the internet is like beer at a frat house so... Dropped the ball would be if it did not function at all. You seem to feel it's a bit rough around the edges; again, new ground with a new system, it happens, the game is so huge not everything can be perfect. It functions quite well and feels pretty balanced to myself and most everyone I've talked to though so that's hardly "dropping the ball."

This is even remotely a troll post.

I'm not sure how a game that took six years of development....
In six years they couldn't even get the inventory menus right.

I mean, come on.

Changing how the UI looks is one thing. I'm not sure how possible it even is to change how it works. At the very least it would require a spectacular amount of work and very likely a third-party installment like SKSE.

I've seen more problems with the other side of it. So many "this little feature isn't 100% exactly like I personally think it should be therefore this game is the worst thing ever made" posts. Honestly I gotta stop coming here this place just makes me depressed the level of vitriol and nerd-rage about mostly tiny nitpicks. Yes bugs are valid issues, the UI isn't the greatest...but people are looking at a forest and complaining over a few trees.

I guess it depends on what parts of it you dislike. Most of the issues I've heard are navigating the menus and mods can probably pretty easily link menus to open directly just by hotkeys. What other ways did you mean?

Dual wielding isn't clumsy itself, and it's actually has very fast attack speed if you max out the perk. I had trouble with the no blocking thing at first, but then I got used to it. The hotkeying bug is annoying though, that pisses me off.

Appearantly just the money as most of the game stocked filled with problems not including the bugs.

Also, what's the point in staves as a caster, besides saving a little bit of mana? They take up a valuable dual-casting position. The lack of a second sheathe really bothers me as well.

Wat.

I can carry around 50 charges of fireball in my pocket, to be used when my manapool depletes and I'm waiting for regen.

I love my staff. If you don't recognize the value of this, don't know what to tell you.

Okay we get it. We got it days ago; you hate the game and you'll continue to name a bunch of games you like instead. Seriously do you have nothing better to do then show up in every thread on this board and troll-face your way across this site? Just don't play the game. I've yet to see you contribute a SINGLE thing to any conversation. At least most of the people on this thread I might disagree with are discussing things, you always just show up, type a few poorly spelled words and disappear.

Some people are being excessively harsh in their complaints about the game, but you aren't acting much better by deriding people with complaints and relentlessly trying to negate anything bad someone has to say about the game.
It isn't even an issue of a person not having a valid complaint and you trying to prove it; you keep basically just telling people their issues aren't that bad and demanding they be quiet about it.
Issues are issues, and they don't get fixed if people just ignore them.

Like when I said people have a valid complaint about the UI problems? I know there are problems and will agree when legitimate ones come up. Just people are so quick to go "ruined forevarrrrr!!!111!" over tiny things. It's typical internet gamer-culture I guess something is either greatest ever or svcks. I'm too old for this crap I guess.

I wish Oblivion would have had the graphics engine cuz it Oblivion graphics not as good but SOOO slow :/ I have to agree the combat is a little choppy and doesn't have a good feel to it. They could've worked on it better, but I'm glad cuz its a lot better than vanilla oblivion. Great engine for real, runs soo smooth.

The first step of not being depressed is to stop clicking on topics you find depressing. There are just as many topics discussing, praising, or just inquiring about the game for you to participate in.

I like dual weilding. I like the interface. I enjoy the favorites menu. My game has not crashed, froze, or bugged in any way during my entire 3 day weekend that I played this non-stop. These issues that everyone's complaing about are all opinions. Stop saying "Bethesda [censored] up" Because some people like the new features. It's obvious that they're doing something right.

I would also be happy if people wouldn't act like they know more about programming than a large team of professional developers. This is their life's work. They probably know more about it than most of you guys.

because the priority was the game world? which admittedly is pretty damn good. even if its a tad console limited.

the combat ..meh. they couldve borrowed a bit from mount and blade as far as horse archery and mounted combat goes - also the spear and javelin (cmon mount and blade is made by a handful of people literally). maybe they could borrow a pinch from dead island as far as thown weapons and limb cutting and kicking minus the arcadey stuff.

i like the skyrim finishing moves even if they are a bit wonky. someone will mod it eventually and maybe ill start a new character then. i just got my sword to 80% damage and have the head chopping perk. its made the combat a bit more interesting withOUT the sword PARRY from oblivion

And how do you interact with the game world?

Thats right, combat.

Environment means nothing if your only means of interacting with it is horribly implemented and brings nothing
but aggravation.

I like my dual wield daggers.

Left mouse + right mouse is a quick double slash that does nice damage.

Holding them both does a cool slashing combo for great damage.

If this is the bad critiques this game is getting, then Bethesda is definitely gonna get praised. Honestly, your pet peeves (yes, everything you say "affects the game" are just your own personal pet peeves) are just silly criteria to say a game is not "incredible". If there was a second sheathe, then it would have been incredible? Give me a break.

And dual wielding is fine. I havent had a problem so far. You know there are perks that make you strike faster when dual wielding, right?
