Questions on Enchanting

Post » Fri May 11, 2012 3:17 am

Hi people,

I'm kinda new to TES series and I don't fully understand the Echanting feature quite yet.
So I've got a few open questions and I'm hoping you guys and girls can help me out:

1. If you've enchanted a weapon and the enchantment has run out of charges, does the enchantment on that weapon vanish entirely as a property of that weapon, or does the enchantment remain a property of that weapon, be it without further effect (because there are no more charges left).

2. In addition this my previous question: Can you remove an enchantment from a piece of equipment you just enchanted without destroying it entirely?

Thanks in advance for the help!

1) The enchantment remains, just without charge. You can recharge the weapon using a filled Soul Gem.

2) When you disenchant a weapon, you learn that category of enchantment. So, if you have an axe with +30 Frost damage, for example, and you disenchant it, then you will learn the "Frost damage" enchantment - NOT the "+30 Frost damage" enchantment. From then on you can enchant any item with Frost damage, and the strength of the enchantment will be dependent on your Enchanting skill and the size of the Soul Gem you use.

For that reason, it's not possible to disenchant a weapon you personally enchanted yourself - because in order for you to have enchanted it in the first place, you must by default already know that type enchantment.

Aha, so once you enchant a piece of equipment, that equipment is forever bound to that type of enchantment, if I understand correctly?

Thanks for the help, that was very clear.

Correct. There is a top-level Enchanting perk that allows you to put a second enchantment on weapons and armour, but you can't remove an enchantment unless it's one you don't already know.
