If you give them a bow and a melee weapon, they'll switch between them. That way, they won't go charging into battle with you, but they'll be able to properly defend themselves if an enemy gets close.

Without question my biggest frustration is the inability to place weapons on weapon racks and the inconsistent placing of items around my house. Sometimes they stay, other times they fly all over the place.
