Talking to NPCs.

Post » Fri May 11, 2012 11:59 pm

The NPCs in the game are so well done that I want to have full conversations with them. Unfortunately, it's just 1 or 2 lines of dialogue. I want to know more about them. What's their history? Where are they from? Do they have a family? Friends? Hobbies?

Immersion. To make them feel less like robots placed into the world by the Bethesda gods.

Well, you can ask some of them why they came to Skyrim (the breton in the general goods store in Whiterun for example). Or you can ask them why they became [profession] eg. companions etc.

The rest I think you might have to role play and use your imagination :)

If I wanted to use my imagination, I wouldn't be playing videogames.

If you didn't want to use your imagination, you bought the wrong video game.

I don't think BGS really thought it through that deeply, but that leaves room to add more background through a mod. Not having access to the voice actors is a bit of a bummer, but at least some of the background could be filled in by NPC journals and such.

Do you have the time to write up background for every npc in the game, and more importantly money to pay the voice actors to record all that backstory?

If so go give them to Bethesda and you shall have your wish :)

I like the new "interactive" speech system where people are doing stuff in the background as you talk to someone, but damn is it annoying when someone else is having a loud ass conversation during my own. I can't stand that in real life and I hate it even more in Skyrim. Doesn't help that I've heard the Jarl of Whiterun have the same conversation with his steward some 5+ times now...
