Can't we just agree that playing a melee character is easier

Post » Fri May 11, 2012 7:21 pm

Seriously, I get where the mages are coming from, and i get where the warriors are coming from... I have played both classes and Warriors are much easier to be successful with than mages, and I mean MUCH easier... Warriors have a point, mages do need to utilize more than just one school of magic, and actually play smarter than just running in all like "IMA FIRIN MAH LAZER"... on the other hand, Mages are right in that Destruction clearly is weak at later levels, while warriors can stick to one type of weapon the whole game without swapping and mixing and matching.

Point is, whether or not mages CAN be successful, warriors are still much easier to play than mages, for simplicity reasons, now can't we just be friends?

Stop with these threads, its getting to the point of spam. I don't know why so many posts are being made that are debating facts, but it's getting silly. It's math and cannot be debated, end of discussion

This is the internet, so... nope, we'll probably still be arguing when TES VII comes out.

Mages are awesome, I have a level 35 2-handed warrior char and a 28 mage char and my mage char by far causes much more destruction and mayhem and kills easier, though of course my warrior can take so much more. seriously who cares which is better just play the game.

Around lvl 35+ you're going to need more than destruction, or atleast play smart (such as setting runes, using the enemies' own oil traps against them, etc.

There are just TOO MANY points I can make that say mages overall are underpowered compared to warriors that I can write a book on it. Here are just a few

1. Destruction never gets stronger.

2. Mage spells are either too weak or cost too much mana to sustain in a fight.

3. Mage runs out of mana, has to run. Warrior runs out of stamina, continues to pound heavy damage.

4. Mages do less damage than warriors AND are 10-100x less durable in battle.

5. Master level destruction spells take 5 seconds to cast, cost too much mana, and don't get stronger after you get them at level 50 while monsters get stronger.

6. Warrior late game can have insanely strong legendary armor and weapons that do 500 damage per regular swing without power swing and tank like a god, mages have the 100 damage master spell that takes 5 seconds to cast when they are vulnerable.

7. Warriors can faceroll through the game with 2 skills and two hack buttons. Mages need to constantly switch spells, run around, drink potions, use shouts, use lydia, ect just to get by.

8. Robes with magic regen/cost reduction is nowhere near as good as the armor that makes warriors unstoppable late game.

9. Warriors with heavy armor and weapons can whip out their flame spell anytime and do as much damage as a mage while able to tank so much more, mages who want to fight with swords end up getting [censored].

10. I have yet to find a pure mage at any level able to complete the main quest line, I see warriors level 20ish complete it easily.

11. A TON of people complain about destruction being underpowered and mages in general compared to warriors. No one complains about warriors be underpowered, only overpowered.

12. This is a TES game. Players should be able to play how they want. If they want to focus on destruction without much help in other magic fields they should be able to do that. Game favors warriors heavily to faceroll through the game.

13. In even decently balanced games, warriors can always tank more damage while mages do much more damage and can nuke from afar. Mage destruction spells are mid-close range spells and can't nuke while warriors do more damage. In league of legends we see spell casters like ryze who die instantly and move slowly but can nuke so well and does more damage than tanks like malphite who are very hard to kill but barely do any damage. Imagine if malphite did more nuke damage than ryze. Who in their right mind would want to play ryze then? Everyone would want to play malphite. Same thing is going on here. People play the more balanced characters and like to play by what is better. This is an elder scrolls game and people should be able to play how they like but instead are forced to be melee or struggle through as a mage.

Or just use melee weapons/ bows/ conjure spells to help defeat an enemy.... I dont see how someone can play as just a pure destruction mage.

The problem everyone is having is that destruction spell damage does not scale with your skill level, and there's no permanent way to boost that damage in the game right now.

Nope, because it depends on how you play the game, plus as far as the math is concerned, it makes no difference whether you overkill by 1 or 1000, the enemy is still dead.

Melee combat always has disadvantages over ranged, by the way, just by the fact that it is melee. If you're dead before you get close, it doesn't matter how much damage you might have done, you're still dead. You also run more risk for things like disease and other contact effects than ranged. Of course, this is also true for touch spells, and Beth needs to learn that stuff like Soul Trap is NOT touch (nor should it be... duh!)

Uh, it's pretty much like that in every RPG ever made. Mages are supposed to be more difficult to play. I can't be the only one who knows about this...

But does it make sense for a spell to never, ever grow in power from when you first get it?
That makes zero sense to me.

It looks more like the problem isnt with how the game scales, its with people not accepting that one aspect of combat(magic) doesnt go through the same scaling as another form of combat(melee).

Its how the game is. It is what it is. No need to complain because its difficult for you to accept or play because youre used to previous iterations and other games. Like someone said, and as I said before, part of the game is there are many ways to defeat an enemy if one aspect of combat, i.e "destruction magic past level 35", is too tough, either use melee/ bows/ conjuring/ magicka potions/ companions, etc. to help along with your destruction magic.

I personally don't have a problem with it because I'm rolling 1h/destruc/alteration. I just think it's stupid why your spells literally gain 0 power as your skill goes up (not counting perks).
This is especially a problem since they took out spellmaking. What if I like the effect of sparks/flames/frostbite and want to use it at a higher level? (Or alternatively, a weak AoE for lower levels). Not possible in Skyrim.
Game is awesome though, don't get me wrong. These two things are probably the first things i fix with mods
