Finally some feedback

Finally got some feedback from John carmack after numerous tweets and bad news I'm afraid! At least we know where we stand now! I'll be taking my game back today!

@ID_AA_Carmack John, Pls b professional an give us ps3 customers a heads up. If u cant do anything then just let us know, this is ridiculous!

@Kiddodude we don't know of anything we can do to improve ps3 performance much, especially on wasteland. Tight memory, poor IO performance.

For those who question authenticity I don't care, I for one will be returning the game and I hope you all do too!

So you want to return the game because... you aren't satisfied with the game technology? What will you tell the person at the store? That you don't want it anymore because of the graphics?

I hope NOBODY returns their game for such a reason.

Also... Carmack and id were very open about the texture loading before the game came out. He even described the worst case scenario that a player could perform to really see the texture loading in action. He said the PS3 version had the most latency with streaming. He tweeted previously the platform order of best to worst for the streaming (I think PS3 was in the middle, with X360 disc and hd-cache being the worst cases). Previews of the game indicated the PS3 version had more visible texture loading than the PC version. E3 videos of the X360 version had visible texture loading. So all this information was out there. I'm sure Carmack read your tweet and was highly annoyed at your demand to "b a profressional" considering all the pre-launch information available. Did you ever look into any of that before demanding answers from Carmack?

I have the PS3 version. I've finished it, and the texture streaming didn't bother me at all. While you are at the store, tell them that you didn't like how much brown there was, and that there weren't enough shining surfaces and that character shadows are overlayed over pre-baked shadows... maybe they will even toss in a free game for your troubles.

Good luck. Most places will not accept returns on opened software. They will only exchange it for a new copy of the same game if your copy is damaged.

Well, there are quotes from ID indicating there should be little or no pop ups aswell, so It's not like there were an definite truth out there. Also, consumers shouldn't need to check gamingsites and forums and watch long ass company key notes before buying a game. When the game hits the shelves we as consumers should just expect it to work properly.

Ofcourse the hard fact of life is, not everything will work as expected, but that doesn't make it okay to release unfinished products. I hate how people like you somehow think this isn't ID's fault, that It's just us being picky or Sony fault for not making a more powerful console 5 years ago. This is only ID's fault, and Carmack sure as hell shouldn't be angry on people asking him for reasons behind all this mess.

I still don't think anyone can expect refunds, I sure don't expect anything at this point. Situations like this happends sometimes and it seems like this is the final nail in the "will there be a patch" coffin. Frustrating, yes, but I'm just gonna try to move on now. Wasted too much time.

Wow no need to player hate was just giving information. Wasn't expecting refund just gona swap it in as pre owned. As for the rant about doing research prior to buying. My problem is no company in any industry should release a product with performance as bad as rage on ps3. It simply shouldn't be allowed. Anyway I'm over waiting for a patch now. Pc version 1080p is beautiful and goes without saying this is an amzing game!

You can't do anything to fix the tight memory; however, you can improve the poor IO performance significantly with a faster HDD with more cache. SSD would be ideal, but if you don't have that kind of money to fork over for a new HDD, just get a higher RPM HDD than the stock 5400 RPM drives. I already ordered a hybrid 500 GB HDD for about $90. It is true I did so, so I could get better performance from this one game, but I was in need of a new HDD for a while now anyways. He gives you the solution to address your problems. Check out some videos of Rage running off of SSDs if you want to see proof. Personally, the texture pop up doesn't bother me terribly. I still enjoy the game overall. I enjoy it more than Borderlands. While I'm going on about games I enjoy, I still think Killzone 2 has the best FPS multiplayer.

I can understand for sure that people may have had certain expectations. I wish everyone was satisfied with the game. You are right that consumers shouldn't have to check on places about possible graphical elements they may not like. I don't think "fault" is the right word at all. They don't consider it a fault. It's a trade off for the unique texturing. Plus I am only speculating that Carmack was angry.

What annoyed me about the OP was that id had at the very least tried to prepare people for it. The OP tweeted a very annoying tweet (and quite a few tweets before that to @ID_AA_Carmack) demanding answers which were there to find already, seemingly without checking up on it.

To my knowledge id has never stated there would be no pop-up. I do remember Tim Willits saying there would be no "nasty" pop-up. Nasty is subjective of course.

The sad truth about this is that THIS IS HALF FINISHED PRODUCT THAT SHOULD NEVER GOT OUT!!! Everything Carmack and his bunch of liars are saying is a damn lie. In fact they don't say anything cause they know they screwed us on ps3.

Sounds like a corrupt save file. In the future I recommend using multiple saves and saving semi regularly. I take it you've already tried loading from the autosave.

I blame all of them! But first Carmack cause when he saw this mess on ps3 and 360 he had to stop the game to get out! Nobody can tell me that they didn't know and didn't see it! And now the silence! Not a word from them! Bunch of mf.

I finished the story, did all the jobs for Wellspring, 1 or 2 jobs in Subway Town, did some races, and played a little bit of multiplayer and co-op; My advice, don't spend to much time stressing too much about this game because it's not worth the energy. It's a really fun game, but it's a not even a GTOY contender). I'm playing Half Life 2 from the Orange Box collection that's worth less than this game but I would've gladly pay at the price of Rage (I played after patching 1.10 so I don't get framerate issues). Just play it. I too stressed about this game, I was the first in PS3 section I believe to bring and complain about the texture issue but I just played through it. Again, it's not worth stressing over, just let go and play it.

To reiterate my advice: It's not that great of a game to be stressing over. It's a fun game, just play it and be done with. Now, if it was say Uncharted 3 or Batman Akham City or Bioshock Infinite that had Rage's texture problems then yeah, that'll be worth stressing over.

Completely off topic but did they really fix the framerate in The Orange Box?
I've played HL2 on PC back in the day but I've never played any of the episodes and the only thing that stops me from picking up The Orange Box were the framerate issues.

Well, I got it very recently and the first game I've tried is Portal. I notice frame issue very early on (at the stage where they first introduce the concept of punishment in the form of an acid liquid which can kill you if you fall on it). Basically, if I look anywhere where there's an acid on the floor the framerate would drop severely. I just got back my internet so I was able to install the 1.10 patch and when I went to that stage again the framerate was stable. I did some digging on the patch and found out one of the fixes of the patch was a "memory leakage in single player modes" which turned out to be the cause of the framerate drops. I've yet to try the Half Life 2 games ever because I'm thinking of playing the first Half Life which I found one for $11 on the PS2.

Here's the summary of the fixes for the PS3 patch:
* Fixed a graphical issue whereby a player would have the explosion effect left on the end of their Rocket Launcher when attempting to Rocket Jump.
* Fixed a memory leak to improve single player stability.
* Fixed an issue whereby the players name would not appear on the Stats comparison screen.
* We have fixed an issue that would cause the vote tallies to disappear when you viewed the scoreboard between rounds.
* Fixed an online server issue.
* Fixed an issue that caused a crash when a player that wasn't in Division 1 entered 'Your Leaderboards.
* Fixed an issue with players not always being added to the 'Players Met' menu on the XMB.
* Fixed a bug where a player viewing a friend without an EA account would have an empty entry in the friend's Leaderboard.
* Fixed an issue where it was not possible to connect to the EA servers if you had more than 30 friends.

edit: There are still framerate drops in Portal, but they're all genuine framerate drops. Having to render out multiple levels in through the portal.
