The UI on PC has become the biggest obstacle to me enjoying

Post » Fri May 11, 2012 11:01 pm

I've played over 25+ hours but I still can't get used to the UI on the PC version.

1. I need a hotbar with 30+ slots
2. I need to be able to bind keys to each slot on the hotbar for all 30 slots
3. I should be able to have four hotkeys for four different sets of left & right hand gear/spells.
4. The health bar should always be shown, even a super small version.
5. I should be able to visibly see active powers somewhere on the screen even a super small version.
6. There needs to be a hotkey(s) to make the character use the strongest health, magic or stamina potion. (3 different keys of course)

I can think of 100 things this UI needs for this game.

* 3rd person archery is broken in crouch mode depending on the angles you shoot from
* If you press hotkeys to fast to switch to heal spells the heal spell won't work when you use it.
* When I switch the left & mouse button keys they don't save.

Such an amazing game but there are just too many problems right now.

How long do you think I should wait before playing?

I can even live with only 8 hotkeys. The way builds in this game work, 8 is usually enough unless you're trying to get tricky.

My biggest problem is the 1-8 keybinds and how they're just really awkward to use on a keyboard in conjunction with WASD. Imagine this series of events:

3-3 right-left for a dual-cast ice spike to start the fight.
repeat until they're nearly on me. Oh wait, 2 spellcasters in the mix! Need to get tricky.
8-I (Inventory: apply weakness to magic poison) - Draw my dagger of fear and add a little something to make them die faster.
Spread fears, but oops I miss one! I get an arrow in the back and my health plummets dangerously low.

Reaction: 4-R (heal myself, hurry!) alt-w, all at the same time. But oops, I accidentally hit 5. Soul trap doesn't heal very well. Yay, I'm dead!
Reload same encounter for 5th time because I keep dying to awkward controls.

I would LOVE it if you could keybind items to keys other than 1-8.

And presets for both hands would be awesome. I hate scrolling through my favorites list since I only use 1-5 keybinds. Anything past that is just awkward to reach and I won't use it.

Well I want to play the game but the UI just makes it too annoying.

Try using an Xbox gamepad... I gave up using the mouse and keyboard combo because I couldn't find a key combination comfortable enough for me (I don't use WASD but directional keys, since I use the mouse with my left hand). Interaction with the UI is STILL bad even with the game pad (so I don't think consoles are to blame... Oblivion UI was more functional and the default buttons layout better designed as well) but at least I don't have to waltz all over the keyboard to perform the most basic functions.

This, switching from heal spell and sword to soul trap and sword work unpredictable. Sometimes it replaces the sword with soul trap however you need a weapon to kill target.
Has given up shields as it takes seconds to get the healing spell up.

Need to be able to cast a rarely used spell without adding it to favorites then bind a key.
need a way to assign a spell to right or left hand so then pressing 3 shield is replace with heal, 4 gives soul trap, pressing 4 again should give shield but I could live without it.
Right now it's a mess.

Patch, or release the CK asap so other can patch it.
and yes 30 keymapped shortcuts would be nice, in WOW I have 20 mapped to my mouse.
However this would be like asking someone who can not stay on a bicycle for more than 10 seconds to do tour de France.

Use an Xbox gamepad. That's what the game is designed to be played with. It's also, in my opinion, a lot more intuitive and fun than keyboard + mouse.

Well if all else fails you could stop clicking on them. Its not like someones holding a gun to your head forcing you to read.

It only svcks if you have absolutely no micromanagement skills whatsoever.. And in that case, you should probably be playing a simpler game to begin with...

This is no solution. There are only two, 2, TWO hotkeys for the 360 controller. I'm struggling to be a mage with only 2 hotkeys. What were they thinking when they took them all away? It's insane. :sadvaultboy: I always play with a controller, but it's devastated my gameplay and I'm sad about it. I mean, yes, I can go into the favorites menu during combat but that's horrifically awful as it pauses the action. The UI for this game is bad in a lot of ways. I'm very surprised about that too because in general Beth is all about making games fun to play and these choices take away from that.
